A blind man and his wife, have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting a woman with a wooden plank and in the process allegedly inflicted injury on her mouth.
The blind man, Jide Emordi, 53 and his wife Chiddinma Emordi, 33, according to the police were said to have attacked Christiana Sodiq and injured her.
The police also accused the blind man’s wife of stealing the complainant’s Samsung Galaxy 35 2017 model phone valued at N125,000.
A police source said that the arrest of the couple was ordered by the Female Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ilasan Division, Lekki, Lagos, SP Onyinye Onwuamegbu following a complaint by Sodig.
The couple were charged before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos on a two-count charge of felony to wit, unlawful assault occasioning injury and stealing.
Police prosecutor, Ajaga Agboko informed the Court in charge No E/57/2017 that the couple committed the alleged offense on 30 November, 2017 on Abioro Street, Elegushi, Lekki, Lagos where they lived with the complainant.
Agboko told the court presided over by Magistrate K.S Abdulsalam that the complainant reported to the police that she was inspecting her brother’s building project and taking pictures of the structures to send the pictures to her brother abroad when the couple suddenly attacked her with a wooden plank and injured her in her mouth claiming that she was taking their pictures.
Agboko said that the complainant further stated that the wife of the man stole her phone in the ensuing confusion.
He said that the offences the couple committed were punishable under sections 173 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State,2015.
The couple pleaded not guilty to the alleged offense and their Counsel, Kenneth Okechukwu urged the court to admit the couple to bail on the most liberal terms to enable them go home because the wife is the one leading the husband who is blind.
Magistrate Abdulsalam granted bail to the man alleged to be blind in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ilasan Police Station till he fulfilled the bail conditions.
Abdulsalam admitted the wife to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum and ordered that she be remanded in prison custody if she could not perfect the bail conditions before the court closed proceedings for the day.
She adjourned the case till 22 January, 2018 for mention.
