TOPIC: LIFE IN THE SPIRIT
TEXT: Romans 8:8-23(NKJV)
8:8. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
8:9. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
8:10. And if Christ [is] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin, but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness.
8:11. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
8:12. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors — not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
8:13. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
8:14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
8:15. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
8:16. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
8:17. and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with [Him,] that we may also be glorified together.
8:18. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
8:19. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
8:20. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected [it] in hope;
8:21. because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
8:22. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.
8:23. Not only [that,] but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
STUDY:
Life in the Spirit is a life in which the Spirit of God dwells and consequently directs the life of the believer who has genuinely surrendered his/her life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ (v 9-10). Such life is empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a life that overcomes the lustful desires of the flesh (Adamic nature) and as a result can mortify the deeds of his body (v 11-13). Furthermore, the presence of the Spirit of God in a man serve as proof that that man is a child of God. This is because according to v 14-16, the Spirit of God bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God. Such are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Being joint heirs of God and joint heir with Christ qualify the believers to enjoy great inheritance that we have in God. This inheritance is manifested in two ways: first in the glory that shall be revealed to the world (v 18-21) and second in the suffering the believer will have to go through for the sake of his faith. Friends, there is no condemnation to believers that are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit. I hope you are part of this group of believers? If you are not, you can become a member by surrendering your life to Jesus Christ and ask Him to become the Lord of your life and thus put the Spirit of God inside of you.

Dear Lord I submit my heart to you afresh, please come into my heart and fill me with your spirit in Jesus name, Amen.
