Topic: MAINTAINING A GENUINE FAITH
Text: 2 Timothy 1:1-8
1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
1:2 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
1:3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did as without ceasing night and day I remember you in my prayers night and day,
1:4 greatly desiring to see you , being a mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy,
1:5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you , which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, is in you also.
1:6 Therefore, I remind you to stir up the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
1:8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.
STUDY:
The genuine faith of Timothy was spoken of by Paul. This genuine or sincere faith spoken of about Timothy, first dwelt in his grandmother, Lois, and in his mother Eunice. It did not come through heredity, but through prayer and Christian training. Timothy was to boldly and without fear, put this faith to work, since God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. Timothy was being encouraged to be ready to suffer afflictions that may arise.
To avoid generational gap, as parents, we must bring up our children in the faith we share. Afflictions are aids used to prove the genuineness of our faith (1 Pet. 1:6-7). The strength needed to stand affliction is already given but must be exercised or stirred up as we deliberately come daily to the throne of grace. How genuine is your faith in Jesus? Be prepared to suffer for His sake this year. As you preach the gospel, lay hands on the sick, cast out evil spirits and win souls for the kingdom of God. God will honour your faith.
Prayer:
Father; please help me to come before you daily so as to stand in the days of adversity.
