Topic: AVOIDING IDLENESS AND LAZINESS

Text: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which [a]he received from us

3:7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you;

3:8  nor did we eat anyone’s bread [b]free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you,

3:9 not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us.

3:10  For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.

3:11  For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.

3:12 Now those who are such we command and [c]exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.

3:13 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good.

STUDY:

In our text today, Apostle Paul warns against idleness and laziness. Though the Thessalonian believers were eagerly waiting for the Second Coming of Christ, Paul urged them to be busy and engage in ventures while doing so. Some of them had stopped working so Paul reminded them of how they themselves toiled night and day to provide for their needs and not be a burden to any of them (v. 8). This was to serve to them as an example to follow (v. 9). For emphasis, he declared that “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” (v. 10).

Since we must eat daily and do not know the actual day of Jesus’ Second Coming, we must continue in normal daily activities, including engaging in meaningful ventures while waiting. Are you idle? Prayerfully ask God to help you get engaged in something meaningful. Are you unemployed? May the Lord come to your rescue and make you smile very soon. However, you must engage in little things while waiting for that breakthrough!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to overcome every spirit of laziness and idleness while awaiting your return.
