The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a nationwide three-day period of mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday.
In a statement released on Monday in Kano, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, confirmed that all ADC political engagements, both nationally and at the state level, would be paused for the duration of this mourning period.
Senator Mark praised Buhari’s unwavering devotion to Nigeria, recognizing his dual roles as a military and civilian leader.
He described Buhari as an exceptionally principled statesman who bravely championed Nigeria’s unity and integrity as a soldier, and significantly contributed to democratic progress as an elected president. He also highlighted that discipline, dedication, and deep patriotism were hallmarks of Buhari’s leadership.
Moreover, the ADC chairman appealed to the Federal Government to consider ways to permanently honor Buhari’s memory. He proposed the establishment of memorials, institutions, or programs that would reflect Buhari’s core values, ensuring his legacy endures for future generations.
The party extended its sympathies to the Buhari family, the Nigerian government, and all citizens mourning this loss, encouraging its members and supporters to observe the mourning period with appropriate gravity and reverence.
