Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver assaulted last year by Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency (APGA), is now on friendly terms with the lawmaker. The incident, which sparked outrage, saw Ikwechegh slapping and insulting the driver after he delivered a package to the lawmaker’s Abuja residence.

In a video recorded by the victim, Ikwechegh was heard calling Abuwatseya a “rat” and threatening to make him disappear. The lawmaker later explained his actions, claiming the driver had disrespected him by asking him to step outside to collect the snail delivery.

Amid public backlash, the 44-year-old politician apologized for his actions and said the matter was resolved through alternative dispute resolution methods.

During an interview on Channels TV on January 28, 2024, Ikwechegh described the altercation as unfortunate and a “low moment” in his life. “What happened was quite unfortunate, but I take it as an opportunity to build a relationship with the young man. Today, we are friends,” he said, adding that the case was dismissed by the court for lack of merit.

While reflecting on the incident, Ikwechegh claimed many Nigerians did not understand the full context of what led to his actions. “The video that everybody saw was a low moment. I felt the sanctity of my home was being desecrated. Actions preempt reactions, but whatever anybody saw is not indicative of who I am,” he stated.

The lawmaker reiterated that both he and Abuwatseya have moved on from the incident. “The young man is my friend now. I’m very close to his bishop and pastor. I’ve met new friends through this, and today, the whole of Nigeria knows me. We’ve moved on,” Ikwechegh concluded.
