IKENNE-REMO, OGUN STATE — The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) begins its apex legislative and spiritual body, the 15th General Synod, from September 14 to September 18, 2026, at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, being hosted by the Diocese of Remo, Province of Lagos.
The Synod which will be presided over by the Archbishop, Metropolitan, and Primate of All Nigeria, His Grace, The Most Rev’d Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba, MA, BD, MA (Ed.), DD, is the triennial convocation that gathers the House of Bishops, House of Clergy, and House of Laity alongside ecumenical guests and national leaders. The host Bishop and Archbishop of the Province of Lagos, The Most Rev’d Dr. Michael Olusina Fape, together with the Executive Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, CON, will join the Primate in formally opening the synod on Wednesday 16th September 2026.
The 15th General Synod is anchored on the theme: “The Priesthood of All Believers: Equipping God’s People for the Work of Ministry” (1 Peter 2:4–5, 9–10). The assembly which is the highest governing body of the Church aims to deepen spiritual revival and mobilize the broader body of Christ for active kingdom stewardship, moral integrity, and community transformation across Nigeria while looking deeply inwards to strengthen its governance and leadership.
Beyond statutory legislative sessions and internal governance reviews, the General Synod will feature critical seminar sessions and policy presentations addressing church leadership and national well-being, part of which will include among others;
- Reviewing the historic G26 Abuja Affirmation and charting sustainable pathways for confessional Anglican witness and global missional autonomy.
- Examining the imperatives of the New Nigerian Electoral Act for Christian participation, non-partisan voter education, peaceful engagement, and democratic accountability ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
- Relaunching nationwide initiatives against drug and substance abuse, alongside strategic discussions on expanding healthcare accessibility through the Church of Nigeria 8-Point Health Action Plan and Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) framework.
- Conducting key elections, board ratifications, financial audits, and constitution reviews to bolster administrative efficiency across all dioceses.
This Synod is also featuring a significant service of the consecration of four Bishops-elect which comes up on Tuesday 15th September 2026.
The General Synod will conclude on Friday, September 18, 2026, with the adoption and release of an official Communique and Pastoral Letter to the Nation, providing clear spiritual counsel and policy recommendations on national development, security, and the Christian witness.
