Topic: REKINDLING KOINONIA

Text: Acts 2:37-47

2:37  Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2:39For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

2:40  And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [b]perverse generation.”

2:41  Then those who [c]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

2:42  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [d]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

2:43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

2:44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,

2:45 and [e]sold their possessions and goods, and divided[f] them among all, as anyone had need.

2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,

2:47  praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added [g]to the church daily those who were being saved.

STUDY:

Our text paints a vivid picture of the early church, not just as a gathering of individuals, but as a vibrant community deeply rooted in koinonia – fellowship. It highlights key aspects of their community: Devoted study of the apostles’ teachings, genuine love and care for one another, shared meals, consistent prayer, and radical generosity in sharing their possessions. These characteristics created a powerful and changed-making community that experienced rapid growth and impacted the world around them.

This passage challenges us to examine the state of koinonia in our churches today and consider how we can revive this essential element of Christian life. How can we do this? By prioritising authentic relationships, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction, practising generosity, deepening our prayer lives, and studying God’s Word together. If we do these, we can cultivate a deeper sense of community and experience the power of Christian fellowship. Let us strive to build churches where love abounds, where burdens are shared, and where we truly live out the gospel together. We must encourage one other to live out our faith in practical ways, supporting one another and growing together in Christ.

Prayer

Lord, grant me the grace to love one another as you have loved us, to share my resources, and to grow in our faith together: Amen.
