TOPIC: PROFITABLE EFFECT OF HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM

Text: Acts 2:14-28

2:14   But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.

2:15  For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only [a]the third hour of the day.

2:16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

2:17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.

2:18  And on My menservants and on My maidservants ..I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

2:19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.

2:21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’

2:22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—

2:23  Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you [b]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death

2:24 whom God raised up, having [c]loosed the [d]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.

2:25 For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.

2:26    Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.

2:27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

2:28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’

STUDY:

Our text provides a powerful account of Peter’s Pentecost sermon, where he clearly explains the significance of the Spirit’s outpouring. This event wasn’t just a show; it marked a turning point in the history of the early church. Peter, with the eleven, were earlier hiding behind closed doors for fear of the Jews, but the spirit came upon them and had a positive, profitable effect on their lives and ministry. Before Pentecost, the disciples were fearful and hesitant. However, empowered by the Holy Spirit, Peter boldly addressed the surprised crowd, proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus, with conviction.

This demonstrates how the Spirit equips believers with courage, enabling them to overcome fear and share their faith with the world. Peter’s message was not merely a recounting of events; it was a powerful proclamation of the gospel filled with the Spirit’s anointing.

The crowd, deeply impacted by his words, were “cut to the heart” and inquired about what they should do. This shows the power of a Spirit-filled message, convicting hearts and leading to repentance. As a result of Peter’s Spirit-empowered message, thousands were saved. The early church experienced explosive growth, demonstrating the incredible impact that Spirit-filled ministry can have. This serves as a powerful reminder that the Holy Spirit is the key to effective evangelism and church growth. To deal with fear, and to be able to stand up like Peter and remain standing amid attacks and arrows against the Christian faith in our day, the spirit baptism is essential. We must seek the fullness of the Spirit today.

Prayer

Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit, empowering me to be a bold and effective witness for you. Grant me the courage to share your love with the world. Amen.
