TOPIC: THE FAMILY THAT HONORS GOD
TEXT: Colossians 3:18-21(NKJV)
3:18. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
3:19. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.
3:20. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
3:21. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
STUDY:
There are certain behaviors, attitudes and practices that make Christians and their families unique and admirable. Our passage today tells us how best we can conduct ourselves towards each other in family relationships in a way that will attract glory for Christ. When we obey these principles, we will build godly, healthy and joyful families, and by extension a better and healthier society. First, wives are instructed to submit themselves to their husbands, and this is fitting and pleasing to the Lord. In a world filled with twisted cultural mindsets and the theories of feminism, it is becoming increasingly hard for many wives to obey this principle.
But if a Christian family must glorify God, this principle is a must. Note that the wife is called upon to submit herself to her husband willingly and not by force. Her action should be a free-will decision because she loves the Lord. A wife cannot truly love Christ without showing that love through submission to her husband. Second, husbands are to love their wives the way Christ loved his Church and gave himself up for her (Eph. 5:25). This is a self-giving and self-sacrificing kind of love. Moreover, Christian children are to obey their parents; and parents are to raise and train their children with firmness, patience and love.
PRAYER: Lord, may my family truly glorify you, Amen!
