Mishandling the naira could harm the nation’s economy, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned, urging Nigerians to show greater respect for the national currency.

In a statement released on May 13, 2025, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said the ongoing crackdown on currency abuse is part of the commission’s broader responsibility to enforce financial regulations and safeguard Nigeria’s economy.

He described the naira as a powerful symbol of the country’s economic identity and warned against acts such as spraying, tearing, or defacing banknotes, which are considered violations of existing laws.

Oyewale commended the public for the gradual improvement in how the naira is being handled, while encouraging continued compliance and awareness.

He reaffirmed the EFCC’s commitment to upholding laws like the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act and stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the naira in order to support national growth.

“The respect we show the naira reflects our respect for the economy itself,” Oyewale said. “Protecting it from abuse is essential to ensuring financial stability and fostering development.”
