The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has dismissed claims circulating in some Nigerian media outlets about introducing a resit examination for candidates needing make-up papers in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
WAEC clarified that the report originated in Ghana and pertains only to Ghanaian candidates, not Nigerians.
In the viral story, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, was quoted as the source. However, Kapi is a Ghanaian official based in WAEC’s Ghana office. WAEC Nigeria emphasized that its first series of private candidate exams, introduced in 2017 under the leadership of Mr. Olu Adenipekun, remains unchanged. This series, typically held between February and March, has been maintained by subsequent heads, including Patrick Areghan and the current Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut.
WAEC Nigeria’s Public Affairs unit head, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, confirmed to Tribune Online that the report is misleading and unrelated to Nigerian candidates. She reaffirmed that the private candidate exam format has not changed, and this year’s edition will proceed as scheduled.
The annual examination structure in Nigeria continues to include three series: the May/June WASSCE for school-based candidates, the November/December exam for private candidates, and the February/March first series for private candidates.
