Lauding the Supreme Court ruling on Local Government autonomy as a landmark decision, President Bola Tinubu asserted that it aligns with the Constitution’s principles regarding the statutory rights of council dwellers. He noted that ineffective local government administration has been a major hindrance to Nigeria’s progress.
Tinubu highlighted that governance at the grassroots level has been lacking and urged local council leaders to ensure that residents benefit from effective service delivery.
He stated, “The Renewed Hope Agenda focuses on all Nigerians, regardless of faith, tribe, gender, or political affiliation. This ruling allows people, especially the poor, to hold local leaders accountable. Local government finances will be transparent, and services must be delivered without excuses.”
Tinubu explained that his administration initiated the legal action to ensure that only elected local officials control local resources. He described the ruling as a step toward restructuring Nigeria’s governance and economy for a fairer society.
The President pointed out that essential services, such as road maintenance, street lighting, and community security, have suffered due to the undermining of local governments. The Supreme Court’s decision, he said, is historically significant and strengthens efforts to enhance Nigeria’s federal structure for national development.
Tinubu commended Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, for his dedication to the case and reiterated his administration’s commitment to efficient, performance-driven governance for all Nigerians.
