A deadly carbon monoxide leak at a ski resort in Gudauri, northern Georgia, has claimed the lives of 12 people, police reported on Monday.

The victims, including 11 foreigners and one Georgian national, were found in a sleeping area above a restaurant at the popular resort. Authorities have stated that initial investigations revealed no signs of violence, suggesting the leak was accidental.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic, colorless, and odorless gas that can result from incomplete combustion of fuels like natural gas, wood, or charcoal. Prolonged exposure to CO can lead to severe poisoning and even death due to oxygen deprivation.

Local authorities are continuing their investigation, with forensic teams conducting detailed examinations of the scene. The nationalities of the foreign victims have not yet been disclosed.
