GOD’S CHILDREN AS PILGRIMS TO THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM:
MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S REIGN ON EARTH
 THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EASTER
Date: Apr 30, 2023
Sub Theme: Dangers on the path of Pilgrims to heavenly Kingdom 3
 Topic: Legalism
 Text :
Mark 3:1-6
 Aims
to introduce the concept of legalism and
to expatiate on the menace of legalism on Christianity.
 Introduction
Legalism is a theory relating to, or exhibiting strict adherence to the law, especially to the letter of the law rather than its spirit. Legalism will always criticise virtuous acts in other to prove selfish and man-made tradition. Legalists advocate laws that rigidly prescribe punishments and rewards for specific behaviours. In our Bible passage, Jesus placed prominence on love to save the sick rather than obedient to the Sabbath code.
 Study Guide
Explain the word legalism from the context of the Bible passage.
Some Christian denomination and settings have laws guiding prayers. What is the right time and posture for prayers? Psa 55:17; Psa 95:6; Mark 1:35; Luke 6:12; ITim 2:8.
In the worship of God, what are the godly virtues that transcend legalism? ISam 15:22; Pr 21:3; Matt 5:23-24.
Why is legalism a menace to pilgrims on the road to heaven? Matt 23: 25-28; IICor 3:6b
 Conclusion
Legalists will never see the gate of heaven. They end their critics on the platform of earthly morality. Therefore, let us be careful as Christians to seek godliness which grants us moral virtues instead of legalism that make us lose the grace of salvation.
 Food for Thought
Obedient to the laws is meaningless without godly virtues
 Memory Verse
IICor 3:6b “for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life”.
