According to a notice issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.

The programme, managed by EducationUSA Nigeria under the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Mission, is aimed at helping academically talented Nigerian students with strong leadership potential gain access to higher education opportunities in the United States.

The mission explained that the initiative is designed to promote educational exchange while strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United States.

It noted that the 2026 cohort forms part of activities marking the Freedom 250 celebration, which commemorates 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values.

According to the U.S. Mission, the programme seeks to nurture globally competitive talents whose skills and ambitions align with key areas of strategic interest.

Priority consideration will be given to exceptional students pursuing courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other emerging technology fields.

The Opportunity Fund Programme provides financial assistance to cover major application-related expenses, including standardised test fees, application costs and other essential requirements associated with the U.S. university admission process.

To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership qualities, research potential and a clear commitment to pursuing higher education in the United States.

The mission also emphasised the importance of integrity and compliance, noting that successful applicants are expected to observe all U.S. visa regulations and maintain high ethical standards throughout the programme.

Education USA Nigeria said the initiative remains committed to supporting deserving students and expanding access to quality educational opportunities in the United States.
