Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-7

2:1    Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you

2:2  not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of ^[a]Christ had come. 

2:3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of ^[b]sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 

2:4    who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits ^[c]as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

2:5  Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?

2:6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 

2:7  For the ^[d]mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only ^[e]He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.

2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.

STUDY:

The Day of the Lord means different things to different people. For believers in Christ, it will be a great day of deliverance and rejoicing. To the unbelievers, it will be a day of anguish and terrible suffering. While believers who eagerly await this Day wish it should come so soon so that transformation will take place; unbelievers may secretly be wishing it never comes. The truth remains that the Day must come. In verse 3 of our text, Paul warns that nobody should deceive us because that Day will not come unless the falling away first comes (the predicted great falling away of those who have professed to be Christians has come-AMP).

In times like this, what are we expected to be and to do? We must hold firmly to our faith so that we shall not be part of the falling away, no matter when it comes. We must continue in the study of the Word of God and be obedient to its instructions. Again, we must always remain prayerful and depend on the Holy Spirit for direction. With these and determination to make it, we will not be caught unawares.

Prayer: 

May the Day of the Lord never meet me unprepared in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

5:1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you.

5:2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 

5:3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 

5:4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.

5:5  You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.

5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be ^[a]sober.

5:7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.

5:8  But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 

5:9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

5:10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

5:11 Therefore ^[b]comfort each other and ^[c]edify one another, just as you also are doing.

STUDY:

The time and date of our Lord’s (Jesus) Second Coming is known only by the Father Himself (Matt. 24:16). But mark this, it will come like a thief in the night. Thieves operate in concealment which calls for watchfulness and readiness. Anyone that walks in darkness is vulnerable to being attacked by anything.
While waiting and watching, we need to do the following: (i). Walk in the light of the Word of God (Psa. 119:105) to enable us to be awake so that His coming will not take us by surprise.

We must “study to show yourself approved, a workman that needs not to be ashamed… (2Tim. 2:15). (ii) We need to be sober-minded and love others, without which we shall just be noise makers (1 Cor. 13:1). (iii) Guard jealously our prized salvation. We should put on the helmet of salvation to protect both the head and the body. When the head is destroyed, the body is of no effect. (iv) We need to inculcate the habit of encouraging one another as we fellowship together (Heb. 10:25b). Discouragement is a veritable tool in the hand of the devil and he has used it on many, to the point of making them believe that Christianity is a scam. (v) Be prayerful always (1 Thess. 5:17; Luke 18:1). We must also watch and pray so that we do not enter into temptation (Matt. 26:41).

Prayer: 

Lord, give me the grace to live by the light of your word in readiness of your coming.

Text:Zephaniah 1:10-18

1:10 “And there shall be on that day,” says the Lord, “The sound of a mournful cry from the Fish Gate, A wailing from the Second Quarter, And a loud crashing from the hills.

1:11 Wail, you inhabitants of ^[a]Maktesh! For all the merchant people are cut down; All those who handle money are cut off.

1:12 “And it shall come to pass at that time That I will search Jerusalem with lamps, And punish the men
Who are settled^[b] in complacency, Who say in their heart, ‘The Lord will not do good, Nor will He do evil.’

1:13 Therefore their goods shall become booty, And their houses a desolation; They shall build houses, but not inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards, but not drink their wine.”

1:14  The great day of the Lord is near; It is near and hastens quickly. The noise of the day of the Lord is bitter;
There the mighty men shall cry out.

1:15  That day is a day of wrath, A day of trouble and distress, A day of devastation and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness,

1:16   A day of trumpet and alarm, Against the fortified cities ,And against the high towers.

1:17 A day of trumpet and alarm, Against the fortified cities, And against the high towers.

1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold, Shall be able to deliver them, In the day of the Lord’s wrath;
But the whole land shall be devoured, By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance
Of all those who dwell in the land.

STUDY:

Many prophets in the Bible revealed the events concerning the Lord which they also referred to as the Day of Judgment. Through Zephaniah the prophet, God promised that He would search through Jerusalem and destroy the dishonest merchants; those who thought they had power and authority would become powerless and defenseless in the day of the Lord. The judgment of God would come upon those who cheat others to become rich and powerful. It is obvious in the prophecy that there would be no hiding place in the Day of Judgment. Walled cities and highly protected camps and strong towers, shall fall.

The warning given by God through Zephaniah was as strong and certain as the one given in the time of Noah before the flood (Gen. 6:1ff). God condemned the people of Judah for their overconfidence, believing that God cannot do such to His people.
Beloved, the day of the Lord is certain. God gives grace and hope to those who will turn to Him with a heart of humility and genuine repentance. Those who renounce their sinful acts and determine to walk with God in total obedience will surely escape the divine wrath. Accumulation of wealth by unjust means is an abomination in the sight of God and will attract eternal damnation on those who engage in it. As we look forward to the great day of the Lord, we must not take God for granted by ignoring His warnings. Be honest in your walk with Him and your relationship with men.

Merciful and gracious God, grant me the grace to be ready for your coming Day!
