The minister has these declarations made at the 3rd Anniversary of Muslim News Nigeria held in Lagos at the weekend.

The anniversary had in attendance, Alhaji Femi Abbas, Barrister Ibrahim Yakubu Umar, Dr. Saliu Oyelami, former Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdul Lateef AbdulHakeem; Amirah of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria, Hajiah Rafiah Sanni and former Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos Chapter, Dr Qasim Akinreti.

In his speech, Pantami, called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religion or tribe to always speak the truth and promote goodness.

Pantami who also chaired the event said that Islam denounces fake news. Adding, he said that there is no place in the Qur’an and Hadith that encourages spread of falsehood.

“Fake and biased news is one of the issues causing disunity in our country.

“Irrespective of our religion or tribe, we must try to promote goodness, speak the truth, do what is right and encourage others to do what is right. In all the verses of the Qur’an, there is no place Allah agreed with fake news.

“For example, if you look at Suratul Hujuraat, Q.49; verse 6, Allah draws our attention to the need for investigating.

“The Qur’an says, Oh you who believe, if an evil person comes to you with any news, investigate so that you will not harm people out of ignorance and thereafter you regret your action.

“This verse is the foundation of the fight against fake news. As Muslims, even if someone attacks us with fake news, we must not respond to him with same. Rather we should be objective and fair to him.

“For our friends who are in the media, they should always abide by this rule of investigating. This goes beyond the ethics of journalism. It is part of the ethics of Islam as a religion. If we can comply with this, we will make Nigeria a better place for all.

“Furthermore, if you look at Suratu-n-Nuur, Q. 24, Allah espoused to us the dangers of fake news, particularly what was attributed mischievously to the mother of the believers, Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her). When Abdullah Ibn Ubay Ibn Saluul, the leader of the hypocrites spread fake news against Aisha, saying that she committed an illegal sexual relationship with Safwaan, our beloved Prophet directed Aisha to go back to her father’s house and wait until Allah reveals a message about her situation.”

Pompeo, who served as Secretary of State under ex-President Donald Trump, stated this in an article titled, ‘The Persecution of Christians in Nigeria Demands Our Attention’ which was published by the American Centre for Law and Justice on Wednesday.

He said the Buhari regime had suppressed the news of the killings of Christians by masking it as farmer-herder crisis.

The ex-US official said, “At least 1,500 Christians have already been killed in Nigeria during 2021, and even more have been kidnapped and are either being held hostage or trafficked. The attacks are brutal. Armed radical Islamic groups arrive in a village during the night, kill the men, rape and murder the women, and kidnap the children.

“The Nigerian government thus far has sought to downplay the attacks, characterising them as conflicts between herders and farmers rather than as religiously motivated acts of terror. These terrorists must be held accountable for such preposterous characterisations. And given that Nigeria has the largest Christian population of any African country – over 80 million, nearly half of its people – it is essential that this persecution is snuffed out before it becomes even worse.”

The former American official said every single day in Nigeria, Christians aren’t just having their right to religious freedom denied – they are being murdered because of their faith in Jesus.

Pompeo argued that no society that denies its people the right to worship according to their beliefs, or that allows that right to come under attack without consequence, can claim to be truly good.

He said in 2018, 110 schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Dapchi, Yobe State but when a deal was cut to return most of the girls home, one was held back – Leah Sharibu because she refused to convert to Islam.

The former secretary of state wondered how Sharibu could remain in captivity for three years without consequence.

Pompeo, therefore, stressed the need for a foreign policy that takes seriously the issue of ensuring religious freedom around the world is critical to serving America’s interests.

He noted that Open Doors’ Country Report states that today, more Christians are murdered for their faith in Nigeria than in any other country in the world.

“The number of Christians murdered there increased by 60 per cent in 2020. The presence of radical, jihadist Islamic groups in northern Nigeria, such as Boko Haram and the Fulani herdsmen, ensures that this ongoing persecution is likely to get worse. I have personally met with Christian Nigerian leaders and heard their tragic stories of those who have been persecuted because of their faith,” Pompeo said.

He recalled that during the Trump administration, he took the important first steps toward dealing with this serious issue in December 2020, when Nigeria was added to the State Department’s ‘Countries of Particular Concern’ list.

Pompeo said the US recognised that Buhari’s government was tolerating the attacks.

“We did this because we recognised reality – the Nigerian government was tolerating the systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of the religious freedom of its people, allowing them to suffer at the hands of radical Islamic terror.

“This designation signalled to the Nigerian government that swift action on their part was needed to put an end to this persecution, or there would be further consequences in the form of sanctions and increased diplomatic pressure,” he said.

Pompeo revealed that the ACLJ had just filed its 18th written submission and made critical oral interventions at the United Nations Human Rights Council regarding the plight of Christians in Nigeria.

“I’m eager to engage in this work with them as we seek to put a stop to these ongoing tragedies,” he added.

As Nigerians prepare to celebrate the 2021 Eid-el-Fitr all over the nation, the acting Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba has ordered heightened security.

The IGP has approved the deployment of Police officers and other operational assets of the Police Force to ensure security even beyond the Sallah holiday.

CP Frank Mba the Force Public Relations Officer disclosed this in a statement which was released on Wednesday, adding that the IGP’s order was contained in a directive to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), Commissioners of Police (CPs) and other strategic commanders of the Force.

He explained that the order was part of efforts by the police leadership toward stabilising security, improving public safety and making the country a safer place for all citizens.

Stressing that the security of the country is threatened, the police boss promised that these challenges are not beyond control.

The Citizens are assure that the Police Force under his new leadership vision is already carrying out new, improved, tailored-to-suit and robust security solutions targeted at tackling crimes and neutralizing both existing and emerging security threats in the country.

“The IGP, while restating his belief that the nation will soon overcome its security challenges, further noted that the Force is equally upscaling its collaboration with the military and other law enforcement agencies in both intelligence sharing and other target-oriented missions and operations,” the statement partly read.

“He enjoined citizens to support the Police to stage a common front in tackling the challenges. The IGP reminded the citizens of the newly introduced Phase-4 National Response on COVID-19 Health Protection Regulation and called for voluntary compliance with the protocols.”

Commissioners of Police in all the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were also directed to ensure the full enforcement of the orders. He warned that the Police officers deployed for such enforcement must do accordingly with the heights of professionalism while exhibiting compassion, decorum, and due respect for the fundamental rights of the people.

The IGP, congratulated all Muslim faithful in the country as they join the Muslim Ummah across the globe to mark this year’s Eid-el-Fitr. He did this on behalf of the entire officers of the Nigeria Police Force. The IGP encouraged them to take to heart the virtues and teachings of Ramadan in their daily endeavours and admonished all Nigerians to take in the spirit of obedience to the laws of the land and the pursuit of the common good of their neighbours.

PDP Says There Must Be Electronic Transmission Of Election Results In 2023

ACNNtv
Updated May 12, 2021

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no excuses on why the electronic direct transmission of results will not be used in the 2023 general elections and in subsequent polls.

PDP’s opinion is based on INEC’s announcement of its readiness to conduct online (electronic) registration of voters for the forth coming elections in Nigeria.

It was made known in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan who is the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

PDP says since INEC is in the position to deploy technology to carry out online registration of voters, which involves the electronic transmission of voter’s data to its central server, the commission can also conduct an electronic transmission of results directly from the polling unit to its central server.

“Our party calls the attention of the commission to the fact that it no longer has any excuse not to employ the direct transmission of results from polling units, which will ensure credible elections by eliminating manipulations, alterations, switching, and disappearance of election results during manual collation processes.

“The PDP insists that if INEC can use the electronic platform for registration of voters it could as well deploys the same technology for electronic transmission of results in future elections including the 2023 general elections.

“Our party however urges INEC to ensure that the online registration of voters is credible, transparent, and not open to the manipulations of desperate politicians, particularly in the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the statement read in part.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also called on the leadership of APC in the National Assembly to be apt at carrying out the Electoral Act amendment bill.
