Topic: KNOWING AND EXPERIENCING GOD

Text: John 14:8-17

14:8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

14:9 ;Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.

14:11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

14:13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14:14 If you [a]ask anything in My name, I will do it.

14:15 “If you love Me, [b]keep My commandments.

14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another [c]Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

STUDY:

Our text paints a vivid picture of the early church, not just as a gathering of individuals, but as a vibrant community deeply rooted in koinonia – fellowship. It highlights key aspects of their community: Devoted study of the apostles’ teachings, genuine love and care for one another, shared meals, consistent prayer, and radical generosity in sharing their possessions. These characteristics created a powerful and changed-making community that experienced rapid growth and impacted the world around them.

This passage challenges us to examine the state of koinonia in our churches today and consider how we can revive this essential element of Christian life. How can we do this? By prioritising authentic relationships, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction, practising generosity, deepening our prayer lives, and studying God’s Word together. If we do these, we can cultivate a deeper sense of community and experience the power of Christian fellowship. Let us strive to build churches where love abounds, where burdens are shared, and where we truly live out the gospel together. We must encourage one other to live out our faith in practical ways, supporting one another and growing together in Christ.

Lord, grant me the grace to love one another as you have loved us, to share my resources, and to grow in our faith together: Amen.
