TOPIC: THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Text: Acts 2:1-13

2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all [a]with one accord in one place.

2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

2:3 Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

2:5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

2:6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

2:7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?

2:8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own [c]language in which we were born?

2:9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

2:10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

2:11 Cretans and [d]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

2:12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

2:13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

STUDY:

Our Lord Jesus Christ had earlier devoted quality time in teaching His disciples about the person of the Holy Spirit and His importance in believers’ lives (Acts 1:4-8). During his teaching, He explained that being baptised with water was not all that God wanted for His children, but that they should be baptised with the Holy Ghost as well (Acts 1:4; Joel 2:28, 29 Luke 24:49). The teachings of Christ present to believers the benefits they will derive from being baptised in the Holy Ghost. The baptism of the Holy Ghost makes supernatural power available for the believers (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49). Holy Ghost baptism releases boldness upon the believers for an effective life of witnessing for Christ (Acts 1:8; 4:31). The Holy Ghost baptism enhances the manifestations of spiritual gift in believers’ life (Acts 2:1-4, 11; Joel 2:28, 29).

Our text for today serves as a guide to the possibility of spirit baptism. What God did for Christ’s disciples in the upper room on the day of Pentecost can be replicated in the life God’s children who thirst and hunger for righteousness and are ready to come to Him in faith (Acts 1:39; Joel 2:28; Matt. 5:6; Acts 15:8, 9). To be baptised with the Holy Ghost, the believer must be pure and thirsty, with evidence of hunger for the fullness and the power of God. He/she must also ask in faith (Matt. 5:8; John 7:37, 38; Luke 11:9-13).

TOPIC: THE COVENANT-KEEPING GOD

Text: Genesis 9:1-19

9:1 So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand.

9:3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.

9:4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

9:5 Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

9:6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.

9:7 And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; Bring forth abundantly in the earth And multiply in it.”

9:8Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying:

9:9 “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you,

9:10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth.

9:11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

9:12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

9:13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

9:14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; .

9:15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

9:16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

9:17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

9:18 Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan.

9:19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated.

STUDY:

A covenant is an agreement between two parties. God was pleased with the burnt offerings Noah offered, as we read in Genesis 8:30-21. Through this offering, God blessed Noah and his family to be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth. God placed His fear upon every beast of the earth in the extension of God’s love towards Noah, that is, God decided to make a covenant with him and his generation and, by extension, all living creatures.

This is a covenant of divine protection and divine fruitfulness: God promised not to wipe away with flood any longer. He made a token of the covenant by setting the rainbow in the cloud.

The faithfulness of God can be seen today. The rainbow has been seen by countless generations after Noah, even till today. You are precious before God; for you were made in His image. His covenant of peace, fruitfulness and abundant blessings, remain forever. However, for these covenants to be activated, God expects total obedience, giving honour to his words and a heart of gratitude through giving. Keep a good relationship with Him, and you will enjoy the fulfilment of his covenants with your life.

Topic: HE IS RISEN!

Text: John 20:1-18

20:1 Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

20:2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

20:3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb.

20:4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.

20:5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.

20:6 B Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there,

20:7 and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.

20:8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.

20:9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.

20:10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes

20:11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.

20:12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

20:13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

20:14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.

20:15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

20:16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

20:17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”

20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The religious leaders of old consciously looked for reasons to condemn Jesus Christ and His ministry. In our text today, they came with the question of the source of the authority with which He worked. It was not as if Jesus was not sure of the right answer to the question, but He had perceived that they didn’t mean well, and were only expecting an answer to justify their crooked intentions. He decided to manifest divine wisdom by throwing a hard question at them. John the Baptist, whose baptism exercise on Jesus Christ was a divine confirmation of His ministry (Matt.3:16-17), was recognised by them and the people as having come from God, so, they couldn’t play with the people just for their evil intentions against Jesus.

We live in a world that employs every possible means to discredit us. Sometimes, Christians are set up in order to destroy up their God-given ministry. The divine wisdom manifested by Jesus in this instance is a great example to us. However, the manifestation of divine wisdom is very rare without the influence of the Holy Spirit. We are not only to desire to be filled by the Spirit of God, we are to walk in communion with Him daily. By this, we will escape all the traps of the evil one.

Topic: SEARCHING FOR SOULS

Text: Mark 2: 13-17

2:13 Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them.

2:14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.

2:15 Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him.

2:16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”

2:17 When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

STUDY:

After teaching the multitude by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus moved on and saw Levi (also called Matthew), at the tax office. On invitation from Jesus to follow Him, Matthew obeyed. At a dinner in Matthew’s house, Jesus with His disciples, sat and ate with many tax collectors and sinners. The scribes and Pharisees demanded to know why Jesus ate and drank with tax collectors and sinners, and in His response, Jesus informed them that only a sick person needs a physician and that He came solely to call sinners to repentance.

Jesus came to seek and to save lost souls(Luke 19:10). The quest to search for souls made Jesus to go to the sea side, to the tax office, and to a dinner with sinners. His goal was to win souls for the kingdom of God. To win sinners for Christ, Christians need to go out for evangelism, to where the sinners are. Do you make it a point of duty to go out and preach the gospel? This will be hard, except you are born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. Are you a Jesus’ follower or are you an online follower? If you are a follower of Jesus, then preach the word(2Tim.4:2).

Prayer:

Dear Lord, please grant me grace to search and preach to souls.

Text: Psalm 135:5-9

135:5 For I know that the Lord is great, And our Lord is above all gods.

135:6 Whatever the Lord pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places.

135:7 He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries.

135:8 He destroyed the firstborn of Egypt, Both of man and beast.

135:9 He sent signs and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt, Upon Pharaoh and all his servants.

STUDY:

The Lord our God is great, greater than all things, and greater than all gods. He created all things, both visible and invisible, and is in control of all. His power is over all. Indeed, God is omnipotent! Verses 6 and 7 of our text show some of His powers over the physical universe. He has power over people, human authorities, and all living creatures. He sent signs and wonders in Egypt in order to liberate the children of Israel.

When Abraham was in a dilemma over the delay in the fulfilment of the divine promise to give him a biological son, God asked him “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Gen. 18:14). Indeed, nothing is too difficult for God to do. How can we put this knowledge into action? Three important steps can be suggested. The first is to ask yourself a sober question and give an honest answer to it. Do you really believe deep down in your heart that God can do all things? If you do, then do you really believe that God has power over the present personal or other challenges facing you? If so, then trust God in faith that He “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think”(Ephesians 3: 20). Tell Him your challenges.

Prayer:

Omnipotent God, I confess that there is no one like you. Fight my battles.

STUDY:

The Beatitudes are the first part of a series of teachings by Jesus found in Matthew 5:1-7:29. They are 8 key attitudes expected of every true disciple of Christ. The associated rewards are also given. For example, the attitude of being humble is essential to having the kingdom of God, while penitence is rewarded by divine comfort. Verse 5 and Psalm 37:1 indicate that the meek shall inherit the earth. Further, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness shall be filled, while the merciful shall be shown mercy. Verses 8-9 declare that the pure in heart shall see God, and the peacemaker shall be called a child of God. Verses 10-12 present the blessings for those who are persecuted or falsely accused for the sake of Christ. Rather than give in or deny Christ, such a person should be exceedingly glad because of the expected heavenly reward.

Let each of these beatitudes serve as a measure of your relationship with God and your preparedness to see and live with Him forever. Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? Are you pure in heart? Do you fall short of God’s expectations going by these measures, pray and ask God to help you.

Prayer:

Oh Lord, help me to grow in these attitudes.

Topic: CULTIVATING A QUIET HEART

Text: Psalm 131:1-3

131:1 A Song of Ascents. Of David. Lord, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me.

131:2 Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me.

131:3 O Israel, hope in the Lord, From this time forth and forever.

STUDY:

The Psalmist likened his trust in God as that of a child who is separated from discontentment, and waiting and hoping in God. How did he come to this point? He was delivered from the pride of the heart and arrogance of the eyes! He confessed that he did not jump into big things or those that required great insight. No wonder he had to accept his calmed spirit as a child separated from suckling his mother’s breasts. He ended the psalm by advising Israel to hope in the Lord always.

Before a child is weaned or separated from his mother’s breasts, such a child helplessly depends on his/her mother for everything and when not attended to, cries. However, a child cannot stop the mother from weaning him/her! And when this happens, such a child no longer cries, worries and longs to be nursed, but is content because he/she is still with his/her mother. Much more should we be contented and satisfied knowing that God is our shield and shepherd. He is also our refuge and strength, and a very present help in trouble. Do you have a calm heart? If not, you need to call on the name of the Lord to grant you a calm spirit. He is a faithful God and will do it.

Prayer:

Father; please still every noise in my heart and help me to trust in you.

Topic: A CRY FOR MERCY

Text: Psalm 130:1-8

130:1 A Song of Ascents. Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord;

130:2 Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications.

130:3 If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

130:4 But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared.

130:5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope.

130:6 My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning—Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

130:7 O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is mercy, And with Him is abundant redemption.

130:8 And He shall redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

STUDY:

In our text, the Psalmist cries to God to hear his voice and to listen carefully to his requests. He notes that God forgives sins and so he will wait and hope for the answer to his prayer. We can see here that the Psalmist was calling God out of a greatly toubled heart. He seemed to acknowledge that his predicaments could have arisen from a broken relationship with God and therefore sought for His forgiveness. He also earnestly longed to hear from Him. He then called on Israel to hope in the Lord for mercy and redemption.

What sin and affliction do is to ultimately bring you into a depth of discouragement;where you begin to give up hope for your salvation or deliverance. We see from our text today that even in such depths, your cries for deliverance can be heard if only you will, with genuine repentance, cry to the LORD. Since we know that there is forgiveness with God, who is rich in mercy, will you cry to Him today to forgive all your sins and to have mercy on your soul? Can you come to the LORD with full assurance of
faith, that He will hear your cry as you call upon Him?

Prayer:

Father;please deliver me from every depth of despondency.

Text: John 3:31-36

3:31 ”He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

3:32 ”And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.

3:33 ”He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.

3:34” For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.

3:35 ”The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.

3:36 ”He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

STUDY:

John also testified that He who comes from Heaven is above all, speaks the words of God, has a limitless Spirit, and whoever does not believe in Him shall not see life but will face the wrath of God. John’s concern was the fact that despite being from heaven, Jesus’ message was not received (vv. 31-32). However, the reason for this refusal to receive the message was because the people had sought to understand Him using their earthly minds.
We must acknowledge that our earthly minds are too small to figure out the rationale behind the gospel which brings salvation (1Cor.2:14). Only a simple faith is required in our relationship with the Lord.

This truth applies to all of the challenges that we are faced with! If only you believe that He that is from above is above all your troubles, you will experience for yourself, the true God. Determine to believe in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and you will have everlasting life in this world and in the world to come. It is the only way to escape the wrath of God that awaits unbelievers. Which one will you choose: Everlasting life or the wrath of God? If your choice is everlasting life, then believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Prayer:

Father; I surrender all my troubles to you, save me now.

Topic: WITNESSING THE TRUTH

Text: John 3:9-15

3:9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

3:10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?

3:11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.

3:12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

3:13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

3:15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

STUDY:

Nicodemus expressed ignorance and unbelief to what Jesus had told him,”… how can these things be?” Jesus equally wondered that he was already a master in Israel and yet, did not know these things. By implication, he had
been speaking and testifying to what he did not know. Jesus wondered how Nicodemus would believe heavenly things. He told him that the Son of Man would be lifted up, so that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life because God sent His Son to come and save the world.

The response of Jesus to the ignorance and unbelief of Nicodemus is worthy of note by all ministers of the gospel. You cannot be a minister of the life you do not have. “Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We do know, and testify what we have seen; and you do not receive our witness”(v.11). Are you a witness or just a preacher? To what extent have you proven by life, the gospeI you preach? Although Nicodemus expressed unbelief in (vv. 10-11), yet the words of our Lord Jesus remained the truth he could not push away (John 19:39). That’s how powerful the words of a witness can be!

Prayer:

Father; fill me with the power of the Holy Spirit and make me a witness of the truth.
