Gospel Filmmaker and Producer, Reverend Yemi Adepoju, has commended the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) for its decision to sever ties with the Church of England following the appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally.

In an exclusive interview with Gospel Film News, Adepoju stated that the move was not surprising, noting that the Nigerian Anglican Church has historically maintained a steadfast position on the authority of Scripture and the established teachings of the Christian faith.

He clarified that their decision to distance themselves from the Church of England is motivated by a deep conviction and fidelity to the Word of God, rather than by hatred or intolerance.

Citing multiple passages from the Bible, Adepoju underscored that Scripture unequivocally outlines God’s design for marriage and human sexuality.

He specifically referenced Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:4-6, explaining that the institution of marriage is fundamentally between a man and a woman, stressing that the first union was “between him and her, not between him and him nor her and her,” and specifically between Adam and Eve, not “Adam and Daniel.”

Adepoju further emphasized that all believers are called to maintain holiness in every aspect of life, citing 1 Peter 1:15-16.

While acknowledging that all people are loved by God (John 3:16), he stressed that the Bible, which serves as the roadmap for all Christians, does not endorse same-sex relationships, referencing Romans 1:26–27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9–11.

The Reverend stressed the critical importance of balancing compassion and conviction, urging people to speak the truth in love.

He concluded by stating that while he respects the right of individuals to make their own choices, Christians must not compromise fundamental biblical principles.

He urged Christians to work to preserve the integrity of the gospel message (Galatians 1:8-9) and the moral foundations of the Christian faith.

Sarah Mullally has been appointed as the Archbishop of Canterbury—the first woman to hold that position in the nearly 500-year history of the Church of England.

The Church of England on Friday named the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Dame Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury.

Dame Sarah, 63, has served as the Bishop of London since 2018. Her appointment, which follows the resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby, was formally approved by King Charles III.

Known for her career in healthcare, where she was the youngest-ever Chief Nursing Officer for England, she is expected to be installed at Canterbury Cathedral in March 2026.

In her initial remarks, Archbishop-designate Mullally said she approached the responsibility “with a sense of peace and trust in God,” emphasizing her commitment to service and seeking to “bring people together to find hope and healing.”

Mullally acknowledged the responsibility and thanked the church for the trust.

“As I respond to the call of Christ to this new ministry, I do so in the same spirit of service to God and to others that has motivated me since I first came to faith as a teenager,” she said.

“At every stage of that journey, through my nursing career and Christian ministry, I have learned to listen deeply — to people and to God’s gentle prompting — to seek to bring people together to find hope and healing.”

Responding to the appointment, the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), which represents millions of Anglicans, issued a statement expressing “sorrow” and suggesting the decision would deepen existing divisions within the Communion.

The statement, delivered by GAFCON Primates Council Chairman the Most Reverend Dr. Laurent Mbanda, focused on the theological stance on marriage and sexuality of Mullally.

GAFCON highlighted that the Archbishop-designate has previously voted in favour of introducing the blessing of same-sex marriages in the Church of England and has been outspoken in her views on sexual ethics.

The body also believes these actions and views are contrary to scriptural authority and constitute a failure to uphold her consecration vows to “banish and drive away all strange and erroneous doctrine.”

GAFCON also stated that the appointment of a woman to the role makes it impossible for the Archbishop of Canterbury to serve as a “focus of unity” for the entire Communion. “The majority of the Anglican Communion still believes that the Bible requires a male-only episcopacy.”

GAFCON reaffirmed its Kigali Commitment of 2023, stating they can no longer recognize the Archbishop of Canterbury as a credible “Instrument of Communion.”

To address the path forward, GAFCON announced a significant gathering of orthodox Anglican bishops at the G26 Bishops Assembly in Abuja, Nigeria, in March 2026.

The organization also expressed a desire for Archbishop Mullally to “repent” and work with GAFCON to mend the divisions in the Anglican body.

The Global Anglican Future Conference, Gafcon, which is the global family of Anglicans standing together to retain and restore the Bible to the heart of Anglican Churches has spoken over the sudden resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby expressing its sadness over the reasons leading to his resignation.

Recall that on Tuesday 12th November 2024, the archbishop of the Church of England, Welby, resigned over his handling of a child abuse case, according to his official account.

Gafcon through a press statement released today and signed by the Most Revd. Dr. Laurent Mbanda, Chairman of the Gafcon Primates Council noted that while the Gafcon Primates have been critical of the Archbishop’s leadership, the circumstances of his resignation is not an occasion for rejoicing, but for grief and self-reflection.

Some of the Gafcon Primate in Pix || Files

The statement reads thus;

“We are saddened by the news of the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the reasons for his decision. While the Gafcon Primates have been critical of the Archbishop’s leadership, the circumstances of his resignation is not an occasion for rejoicing, but for grief and self-reflection.

The presence of child sexual abuse in the church of God is a pernicious evil, which has brought devastating, long-term effects upon survivors and their families. Yet their trauma is only exacerbated by negligence or inaction in pursuing and prosecuting perpetrators for their crimes. Such failures to act also grieve the heart of God and bring shame upon his church.

We appreciate Archbishop Justin’s willingness to resign from his office, as it shows evidence of his desire to take responsibility for his own lack of action in investigating the allegations against John Smyth, which came to light in 2013. While his own admission of regret and remorse is welcome, the past cannot be undone.

Leadership in any sphere of life is challenging, and no less so in the church of God. Christian leaders are called to be shepherds of the flock. Yet, none of us is perfect, as we all make mistakes, but owning our failures is also the mark of good leadership. While some errors of judgment have greater consequences than others, the Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, knows our frailty and forgives all who are truly penitent. He also cares for the downcast and broken, as he cares for those who have been abused.

We pray for Archbishop Justin, his wife Caroline, and his family as the days ahead will not be without difficulty. We also pray for all those who have experienced sexual abuse by false shepherds in the church of God. May they know the peace of God that passes understanding and that heals all our infirmities.”

Why Welby Resigned

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who is the head of the Anglican Church in England, on Tuesday, resigned following a review that revealed senior church leaders, including Welby, covered up the abuse of over 100 boys and young men by one of its own.

The abuse was perpetrated by a British lawyer, John Smyth, who led Christian summer camps in the United Kingdom and other countries during the 1970s and 1980s.

The independent review released last week found that despite repeated efforts by individuals to bring Smyth’s actions to light, the response from the Church of England was inadequate, amounting to a cover-up.

Smyth, who died in South Africa in 2018 without facing any legal proceedings, had abused boys and young men under his care for decades.

The review revealed that the Church’s failure to act enabled Smyth to continue his abuse in the UK and abroad.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Welby regretted the Church’s failures.

“The last few days have renewed my long felt and profound sense of shame at the historic safeguarding failures of the Church of England,” Welby said in a statement announcing his resignation.

Welby admitted that he first learnt about the abuse allegations in 2013, the same year he became Archbishop, but acknowledged that his efforts to investigate and address the situation were insufficient.

He said, “For nearly 12 years, I have struggled to introduce improvements. It is for others to judge what has been done.”

The Archbishop’s resignation came amid growing criticism from victims and other church leaders.

The Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, remarked, “I think, rightly, people are asking the question: ‘Can we really trust the Church of England to keep us safe?’ And I think the answer at the moment is ‘no.”

Survivor Andrew Morse, who was among those abused by Smyth as a teenager, had called for Welby’s resignation. He criticized the Archbishop’s handling of the situation, stating that had Welby acted decisively in 2013, further abuse could have been prevented.

Welby concluded his statement by acknowledging the profound impact of the review’s findings, noting the pain endured by the victims and the failure of the Church to protect those in its care.

“I am so sorry that in places where these young men, and boys, should have felt safe and where they should have experienced God’s love for them, they were subjected to physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse,” he added.

The Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC) has commissioned its first set of overseers, in a service at All Souls Langham Place, in London.

The introduction of the Ephesian Fund and Alternative Spiritual Oversight (ASO), followed the General Synod decision in November 2023 to approve the bishops’ proposals to change the position and practice of the Church of England with regards to sexual ethics and marriage, by blessing same sex couples as part of normal services. At a subsequent Synod meeting earlier this week, standalone services of blessing for same sex couples received General Synod support and a timetable to work towards clergy same sex marriages was endorsed. As a result of these decisions, many clergy and PCCs have lost confidence in those bishops supporting change.

At the service on Friday, the first 20 overseers were commissioned (a full list of the overseers can be found below). The overseers comprise a group of Honorary Assistant Bishops, alongside other clergy from across the evangelical constituency (spanning charismatics and conservatives, egalitarians and complementarians). They will provide informal oversight to clergy and PCCs who feel a loss of confidence in the spiritual leadership of their bishop(s). This informal and temporary oversight, facilitated by CEEC, does not in any way undermine or replace the legal and safeguarding responsibilities of clergy and PCCs to their bishops and/or diocese.

The Ephesian Fund and ASO are designed to help those who hold to the existing teaching and doctrine of marriage and sexual ethics to remain in the Church of England while a permanent structural reorganisation is pursued within the Church of England.

John Dunnett, National Director, Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC), said:

“The proposals outlined as the next stage in the Living in Love and Faith process represent a watershed for many in the Church of England. The blessing of same sex partnerships and further possible provision for same sex marriage, including allowing clergy to enter a same sex marriage, mean that there are clergy and congregations who now regard themselves as in impaired fellowship with those bishops who have supported these innovations.

“Many clergy and congregations have lost confidence in the spiritual ministry of their bishop, believing them to be in error on this issue. As a result, over the past year, clergy and PCCs the length and breadth of this country have been asking us for spiritual support. Our facilitation of ASO is designed to enable clergy and congregations to stay in the Church of England at this time. We are grateful to this group of overseers for their service to clergy and parishes.”

At the service, the overseers were asked to reaffirm the declarations they took at their ordinations and were asked three questions specific to the role of overseer.

Revd Canon John Dunnett, National Director, Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC), led the congregation as they commissioned the overseers with the following prayer:

We have heard your willingness to take up the role of Alternative Spiritual Oversight.

We now ask that, according to the riches of his glory, God may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.

And so we commission you for this task, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

At the end of the service, Right Rev Pete Broadbent, former Bishop of Willesden, led the congregation in a prayer of blessing.

The CEEC stressed that the liturgy is neither a service of ordination nor consecration. Those being commissioned are clergy who have been interviewed for the role, on the basis of recommendations and references. All have indicated that they are committed to the Church of England’s Five Guiding Principles and to working within the Church of England’s safeguarding framework, properly observing all safeguarding standards.

Together, they were commissioned by the congregation, on behalf of CEEC, to provide spiritual care and counsel to those who are now bereft of the oversight that should properly be offered by their bishop.

The role requires each of them:

To be a person of prayer, spiritual discernment, and maturity and to take a lead in praying for clergy, their family (where applicable), and congregations

To be a person with a history of engagement in apostolic mission and of training and releasing others in mission and church leadership

To be a proven pastor-teacher who handles scripture faithfully with a track record of maintaining sound church doctrine and practice by teaching truth and rebuking error

To be a person who can demonstrate evidence of relational leadership ability and collaborative ministry practice, a team player

To be ready to assist clergy and parishes in the work of teaching and training on sexual and gender ethics and promoting unity in the Body of Christ through our identity in Jesus Christ.

To be a person of Christian character and emotional intelligence

To have an understanding and empathy for the demands of leadership in a parish/chaplaincy/ecclesial community

Right Revd Henry Scriven, Honorary Assistant Bishop in Oxford and Winchester, and an overseer, commented:

“I join all of the overseers in looking forward to offering this provision to clergy and PCCs across the country who are in need of it. I am grateful to CEEC for making this possible at such a challenging time for the Church of England.”

A full list of overseers can be found below:

Leading church leaders representing more than 1300 churches have written to the new Prime Minister expressing their “concern at the lack of religious literacy in British public life and the unwarranted hostility this can breed towards those in Bible-believing churches”.

This is evident, the letter explains, in “the way people talk about a legislative ban on so-called conversion therapy”.

Labour is expected to railroad its plans for “a full trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices”, with sources saying we could see legislation within the first 100 days.

Officials say that by including ‘safeguards’ similar to those found in former Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle’s unsuccessful Private Member’s Bill, Labour will be able to produce workable legislation. But independent legal advice is clear that the supposed safeguards in the Russell-Moyle Bill are worthless and simply won’t protect the ordinary work of churches.

Gay and trans people are already rightly protected from verbal and physical abuse by existing law. An extension of the current law will see innocent, harmless behaviour brought within the scope of a criminal ban.

‘Conversion therapy’ is an elastic term. It is being used to conflate mainstream, traditional Christian teaching on sexuality and gender with abuse.

Activists are no longer simply calling for a ban on already illegal egregious practices. They say prayer and pastoral conversations must be criminalised too.

Parents who dissuade their children from irreversible gender treatment or inappropriate sexual experimentation are also at risk under the Government’s planned legislation.

Co-signatory Revd Dr Matthew Roberts commented:

“Christianity is essential to the history and culture of Britain and remains a vital voice for the wellbeing of our society. Yet increasingly it seems as though some in Government are barely aware of the Church’s existence and almost wholly ignorant of what Christians believe and why. We very much hope that this new Government will recognise the vital contribution of Christians to Britain and will not (accidentally perhaps) legislate against them.”

Co-signatory Revd Graham Nicholls commented:

“We want to be prayerful and supporting of the new Labour Government but have grave concerns about their proposals for a so-called conversion therapy ban. New legislation which will not make any difference to genuine abuse, which is already illegal, but will open the door to spurious accusations to be made against those who want the freedom to live out their Christian faith, and parents and pastors who uphold the Bible’s teaching on matters of sexuality and gender.”

The Church of England’s General Synod has endorsed a motion from the Diocese of London highlighting the plight of the persecuted Church, and calling for the creation of a day of prayer for Christians who face oppression and violence around the world.Sam Atkins/Church of England.

A background paper highlighted the plight of millions of Christians worldwide facing high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith. In North Korea, where Christianity is illegal, believers risk imprisonment, torture, or execution. Similarly, in parts of the Middle East like Iraq and Syria, extremist groups like ISIS have targeted Christians, leading to mass displacement and atrocities.

In China, the government imposes strict regulations on religious practices, frequently raiding and demolishing unregistered churches. Sub-Saharan Africa also sees severe persecution, with Nigeria’s Boko Haram attacking Christian villages, churches, and schools, resulting in countless deaths and abductions. In Pakistan, blasphemy laws are often misused to unjustly imprison Christians and incite mob violence against them.

A 2024 report by ‘Open Doors’ concluded that 317 million Christians face ‘very high or high levels of persecution’ across its ranking. This equates to 1 in 7 Christians worldwide. Geographically, it found that one in five Christians face persecution in Africa and two in five Christians face persecution in Asia. The top five countries are: North Korea, Somalia, Libya, Eritrea and Yemen.

Background information provided to Synod members also highlighted existing initiatives to highlight the plight of persecuted Christians, including #RedWednesday and The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church – together with initiatives more broadly aimed at promoting Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) such as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.

The Pew Research Centre has reported that overall FoRB is in decline, paralleling the global deterioration of democracy and human rights in general. Its 2024 report found that government restrictions on religion – laws, policies and actions by state officials that limit religious beliefs and practices – reached a new peak globally in the year it covers (2021). Harassment of religious groups and interference in worship were two of the most common forms of government restrictions worldwide in 2021.

As a response to this crisis, the Synod backed the motion which highlights the issue and proposes a national ecumenical day of prayer and action dedicated to the persecuted church.

This follows an earlier motion (2022) which condemned persecution of Christians around the world.

Introducing the motion, Revd Preb Dr Amatu Christian-Iwuagwu, Area Director of Mission and Racial Justice for the Diocese of London, said:

“The extent of Christian persecution worldwide is vast and multifaceted, impacting millions of believers across numerous regions. This persecution includes social and economic discrimination, legal restrictions, physical violence, and imprisonment, severely affecting Christian communities.

“Despite these challenges, the resilience and faith of persecuted Christians continue to inspire and call for global awareness, advocacy, and support. By understanding and addressing this persecution, we can work towards a world where religious freedom is upheld and protected for all.”

Supporting the motion, the Bishop of Winchester, Philip Mounstephen, said: “FoRB and the persecution of Christians matters because of its broad impact. But it matters too because we live in an increasingly ideologically and indeed theologically driven world.

“But the biggest threat is from overbearing, authoritarian nationalistic governments who are bolstered by their own particular theology: so Putin’s regime in Russia is bolstered by the concept of Russkiy Mir: a theology shamefully expounded by the Russian Orthodox Church.

“President Xi’s ambitions for Chinese hegemony are bolstered by the ancient concept of Tianxia: literally ‘all under heaven’ – a geopolitical system with China at the centre and Xi at the centre of the centre.

“All these ideologies are very bad news for minorities of every sort, and bad news for the wider world too.”

The motion passed was as follows:

‘That this Synod, in the light of the motion passed at the February 2022 Group of Sessions relating to the persecuted Church (i.e. item 18 on the Agenda, as amended), request the Archbishops’ Council to work ecumenically with other churches to establish a national day of prayer and action for the persecuted Church around the world.’

Votes recorded were as follows:

For: 230

Against: 0

Abstained: 1

John Dunnett, National Director, Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC), said:

<ins class="adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-client="ca-pub-6129075286003471" data-adsbygoogle-status="done" data-ad-status="unfilled">

“Yesterday was a milestone in that standalone services have received General Synod support and a timetable to work towards clergy same sex marriages has been endorsed.

</ins>

“It is deeply disappointing that despite hearing repeatedly in speeches of the need to build trust by avoiding bad process, and CEEC’s continued advocacy of the insufficiency of delegated arrangements, Synod passed the Motion, and the Prayers of Love and Faith bus continues to move forward.

“The leaders of the Church of England seem intent on leading the church away from the biblical teaching and doctrine passed down through the centuries and shared by millions of Christians in the Anglican Communion today.

“CEEC continues to believe that structural reorganisation is the only provision that will guarantee orthodoxy going forward. General Synod’s decision will sadly trigger the launch of a de facto parallel province, as outlined by the recent Alliance letter to the archbishops and bishops, and CEEC will work with our partners in the Alliance to make this a reality. We are committed to remaining within the Church of England and hope that the bishops will come to the table to negotiate an acceptable settlement.”

The motion was carried narrowly by a vote by Houses – Bishops 22 for, 12 against; Clergy 99 for, 88 against; and Laity 95 for, 91 against. The General Synod heard from a range of speakers standing for orthodoxy, including CEEC members – Helen Lamb, Aneal Appadoo, Vaughan Roberts, and Bishop Paul Williams. The speeches tackled bad process and the resulting loss of trust, the likelihood that this motion amounts to a change of doctrine, and the need for a safe space for orthodoxy.

<ins class="adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-client="ca-pub-6129075286003471" data-adsbygoogle-status="done" data-ad-status="unfilled">

CEEC remains committed to Jesus’s commission to his local church to ‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you’ (Matthew 28:19-20).

</ins>

We dare to pray that even in these challenging times God will grant a revival harvest in this country.

We were saddened that, on 8th July, General Synod approved the latest LLF motion.

Despite assurances that this is just one more step in an unfolding process, we believe this was in fact a decisive moment. Stand-alone services were approved and are at the very least indicative of a change in the doctrine of marriage. A pathway to clergy entering same-sex marriage was initiated, and clergy SSM is a definitive change in doctrine. Indeed, it is clear that some members of the House of Bishops are openly advocating such a change.

Voting was again very close, the motion being passed by just 56% of bishops, 52% of clergy and 51% of laity – a very weak mandate for change. Significantly, more bishops than ever before felt unable to support the motion: while 22 voted in favour, 17 either voted against (12) or abstained (5). As we wrote to the Archbishops in a letter on 26th June, we therefore “have no choice but rapidly to establish what would in effect be a new de facto ‘parallel Province’ within the Church of England and to seek pastoral oversight from bishops who remain faithful to orthodox teaching on marriage and sexuality”.

We are not without hope. The Archbishops and the Bishop of Leicester (Lead LLF Bishop) all stated in the debate that they want the Alliance to know we are a valued part of the Church of England; and we are thankful to them for their warm words. However, we do not believe it is possible for us to flourish within the Church of England’s current structures. We need a structurally secure space for the over 2000 clergy supporting the Alliance, and the churches they represent (some 37% of total C of E church attendance and 57% of attendance of those under the age of 18). We have asked the Archbishops and the Bishop of Leicester to demonstrate their desire for us to feel a valued part of the Church of England through actions and not just words, however warm.

Stand-alone services will not be authorised for use until provision has been more fully developed – at the earliest, this will come back to Synod in February 2025. In the coming months, at the invitation of the Bishop of Leicester, we will be engaging in direct negotiations with the House of Bishops. We have made clear that we are not leaving the Church of England or the Anglican Communion. We are hopeful for what will take place in the coming months, and we look to the God of hope to fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in him (Romans 15:13).

Dear brothers & sisters who hold to the faith once delivered,

‘Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.’ Hebrews 12:2

We request all the faithful in the GSFA to uphold our faithful brothers and sisters in the Church of England, bishops, clergy and laity, who have come together as ‘The Alliance’. We stand with them in the struggle that lies ahead as they seek to establish a new Province of the Church of England that will enable them to continue their witness to Jesus with integrity and freedom.

Despite the continued opposition of almost 50% of the Synod, the bishops of the Church of England have now succeeded in gaining support for services of blessing for same sex couples and the endorsement of a timetable to enable clergy to enter into same sex marriages.

With heavy hearts we see with increasing clarity that they will not be deterred from taking a path which is entirely contrary to the teaching of our Lord as held universally by the Christian Churches for two millennia and that they will continue regardless of the hurt and dismay suffered by faithful Churches of the Global South.

This latest development serves to illustrate the new reality that we felt compelled to articulate in the GSFA Ash Wednesday Statement of Feb 20th last year. The Church of England has set itself to cement its departure from the historic faith by liturgical change. There can therefore now be no doubt that the Mother Church of the Communion has forfeited her leadership role in the global Communion and that the legacy ‘instruments of unity’, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the other instruments over which he presides, (the Primates Meeting, the Lambeth Conference and the Anglican Consultative Council) are all compromised.

Yet in the great mercy of God there is hope and a future. Last month, the GSFA held its First Assembly in Egypt where we were able to adopt the ‘Cairo Covenant’ of 2019, creating a new covenanted ecclesial body within the Anglican Communion. As we stated in our Communique of 18th June 2024 (the same day on which Canterbury Cathedral announced that it would be offering prayers of blessing for same sex couples),

‘GSFA has become a spiritual home for all orthodox Anglicans. The GSFA Covenant of 2019 (also known as the Cairo covenant) is an historic development, a new instrument for the Anglican Communion to bring true unity in diversity which honours the supreme authority of Scripture.’

There is of course much work still to do in growing this new instrument. We are confident of more Provinces subscribing and we will be working hard to ensure that the ministry tracks (Economic Empowerment, Leadership & Ministerial Formation, and Missions Partnership) have substance to support Anglican mission and ministry around the world. The good news is that the GSFA has set itself to redefine the Communion with the adoption of the Cairo Covenant.

In a time of crisis with its temptation to compromise, my prayer is that we will be those who are ‘looking to Jesus’ before anyone or anything else, faithful to the ‘founder and perfecter of our faith’ and willing to endure.

With faithful Anglicans around the globe, including Gafcon and GSFA Provinces, we grieve that our Mother Church, the Church of England, has abandoned her children who wish to uphold the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ on marriage and his apostle’s clear denunciation of all forms of sexual immorality.

The recent decision of the General Synod to approve the use of prayers of blessing for same-sex couples is to bless what God does not bless and is nothing less than prayers which sanctify sin.

In answer to a question asked at General Synod (Q52), which requested assurance that such prayers were not a departure from the doctrine of the Church, the Bishop of Leicester replied that they did ‘not involve any departure from doctrine in “any essential matter”.’ Yet the apostle Paul indicates quite clearly that those who engage in sexual immorality, including homosexual acts, will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Ephesians 5:3-5), for on accounts of such behaviour, the wrath of God is coming (Colossians 3:5-7; Revelation 22:15). How can any bishop, let alone the majority of the House of Bishops claim that sexual immorality is not an ‘essential matter’ of doctrine when it affects one’s salvation?

Like the Pharisees of old, they incur the same judgment of Jesus that they are blind guides, who will be uprooted, for they refuse to believe that sexual immorality defiles a person (Matthew 15:10-20).

Gafcon provinces stand with the members of the Alliance who desire a third province in the Church of England, and who recently commissioned overseers to provide pastoral care for those who are in impaired communion with their bishops. We endorse these developments. While we recognise the legal complexities of the Church of England, we support the creation of a third province for those who wish to remain in the Established Church. While we have already made provision for the Anglican Network in Europe, which includes three biblically orthodox dioceses operating in England and Europe, Gafcon supports all faithful Anglicans, whether they choose to stay and provide a witness to the truth in their home church, or whether they wish to leave for the sake of conscience. Wherever faithful Anglicans find themselves, Gafcon is ready to support, encourage and defend them—they are not alone.
