Text: Philippians 3:12-21

3:12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.

3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have [b]apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

3:15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.

3:16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already [c]attained, let us walk by the same [d]rule, let us be of the same mind.

3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.

3:18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

3:19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.

3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

3:21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

In our text, Paul reflects on the Christian journey, emphasising the power of a Christ-centered mindset in pursuing spiritual maturity. He acknowledges that he had not yet reached perfection but was pressing on to take hold of the purpose for which Christ took hold of him (v. 12). This humility and focused mindset highlight the believer’s need to continually grow in their relationship with Christ.

Paul encourages believers to follow godly examples and avoid the path of those who live as enemies of the cross, whose focus is earthly desires (vv. 17-19). In contrast, a Christ-centered mindset shifts our identity to being citizens of heaven, eagerly awaiting the return of Christ, who will transform our bodies to be like His glorious body (vv. 20-21). This passage challenges Christians to adopt a mindset shaped by eternal values, striving for Christ’s likeness and living with purpose and hope.

STUDY:

In today’s passage, Paul emphasises the all-sufficiency of Christ, declaring that Jesus alone is enough for salvation, righteousness, and spiritual growth. Paul warns against false teachers who promote the idea that human efforts such as following religious laws and traditions, are necessary for salvation. He emphasises that salvation comes through faith in Christ alone, not through reliance on human achievements or rituals (vv. 2-3). According to Paul, true believers are those who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and place no confidence in human achievements (v. 3). Paul shares his personal journey of rejecting reliance on his achievements and traditions, counting them as “rubbish” compared to the supreme value of knowing Christ (vv. 7-8).

His ultimate desire is to know Christ fully, experiencing the power of His resurrection, sharing in His sufferings, and conforming to His death (vv. 10-11). This passage reveals that Christ is our all-sufficient Saviour, providing righteousness and salvation. He is also the foundation for spiritual growth. By placing trust in Him alone, believers are freed from reliance on human efforts and can embrace the fullness of life found in Christ. Paul’s testimony encourages us to value our relationship with Jesus above all else, resting in His finished work for our salvation and living in the transformative power of His resurrection.

In our scripture text today, Paul presents himself, Timothy, and Epaphroditus as exemplary models of faithful partners in ministry. Paul expresses his trust in Timothy, describing him as a likeminded individual who genuinely cares for the well-being of the church (v. 20). Timothy’s proven character and willingness to serve alongside Paul demonstrate his faithfulness as a partner in ministry (v. 22). These two people show the importance of having faithful partners in ministry who share a common vision and goal.

Epaphroditus, on the other hand, is commended for his selfless service to Paul and the Philippian church. He had risked his life to serve Paul, and God had mercy on him, sparing his life (v. 27). Paul instructs the Philippians to receive Epaphroditus with joy and to hold him in high esteem (v. 29). This highlights the importance of recognising and appreciating the sacrifices made by faithful partners in ministry. By following the examples of Paul, Timothy, and Epaphroditus, believers can cultivate faithful partnerships in ministry that bring joy and fruitfulness to the church.

In today’s Bible passage, Paul encourages believers to “shine like stars in the sky” in a world marked by darkness and shadows. This passage highlights the Christian’s call to reflect God’s light through obedience, humility, and joy. Paul begins by urging the Philippians to “work out their salvation with fear and trembling” (v. 12). This is not about earning salvation but living in a way that outwardly demonstrates the transformative power of God’s grace. The “fear and trembling” reflects a deep reverence for God and an awareness of the responsibility to represent Him well. Paul reminds them that God is at work within them, giving them both the desire and ability to fulfil His purposes (v. 13).

This divine empowerment enables believers to live differently from the world. By avoiding grumbling and arguing (v. 14), they cultivate unity and peace, which contrast sharply with the surrounding corruption. As they live blameless and pure lives, Christians shine brightly in a world that desperately needs hope and truth (v. 15). Paul likens their witness to stars piercing through the night sky, offering guidance and illumination. Their faithfulness, even in trials, brings glory to God and joy to the community of faith (vv. 16-18), reminding us that living brightly for Christ transforms both us and the world around us.

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, has charged graduating students of St Francis of Assisi College, Wusasa, Zaria, to become agents of moral and national transformation as Nigeria confronts declining values and emerging social fractures.

Archbishop Ndukuba, who is the Metropolitan and Visitor to the institution, gave the charge during the college’s 60th anniversary and 38th convocation ceremony in Wusasa, Zaria.

A total of 119 students graduated across theology and education disciplines, receiving degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
The Convocation Address was delivered by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Yusuf Ishaya Janfalan, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ikara, setting the tone for the milestone celebration.

Highlighting the historic footprint of Wusasa, Archbishop Ndukuba noted that the college began as a modest Discipleship Training Centre before growing like a “mustard seed” into a major theological institution. He pointed out that key national figures associated with Wusasa—such as former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, General Theophilus Danjuma, and renowned educationist Professor Ishaya Audu—have left indelible marks on Nigerian governance, security, and education.

“You cannot talk of the North without thinking of those key players that have shaped, not only in the past but also into the future, the destiny and direction of this nation,” Ndukuba said.

Addressing current societal trends, the Primate noted that God is actively seeking ethical leaders to confront the erosion of values: “Bear the torch and light of Jesus and strive for what is right as you shape the future of this country.”
To support the institution’s academic expansion, Archbishop Ndukuba announced a ₦10 million donation to flag off the construction of a new modern library. Describing the gesture as an opportunity to give back to an area that helped form his own journey, he urged alumni and stakeholders to follow suit.

The event also featured special award presentations recognizing church and public figures who have contributed significantly to the college’s growth, including Rev. Joseph Hayyab, Chairman of the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Earlier, the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli—represented by the Chief of Wusasa, Engr. Isiyaku D. Yusufu—congratulated the college on reaching its diamond jubilee. Commending the institution’s balance of academic excellence and character formation, the Emir urged the new graduates to serve as builders, peacemakers, and ambassadors of tolerance across Nigeria.

Reviewing institutional progress, the Acting Rector, Ven. Dr. Timothy Bako, revealed that the college has secured approval from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to operate independently as St Francis College of Education, with NCE program accreditation as the immediate next phase. He added that the college continues to expand access to tertiary education via its Bachelor of Education affiliation with Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.

Bako outlined recent infrastructural improvements—including a 50KVA transformer, a laboratory tailored for NCCE requirements, and solar power installations supported in part by 10 solar panels donated by House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

However, the Rector cited funding for program accreditation, hostel accommodation, staff welfare, library and laboratory equipment, and perimeter fencing amid regional security concerns as pressing hurdles. He appealed to dioceses with outstanding assessments totaling over ₦10 million to clear their arrears to sustain the institution’s momentum into its next decade.

STUDY:

Today’s Bible text presents a striking contradiction: True greatness lies not in self-exaltation, but in humility. Paul urges believers to cultivate unity, love, and compassion (vv. 1-4). Christ’s selfless example is the standard (v. 5). In verses 6-8, Jesus’ humility is showcased: “He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant… and humbled Himself to the point of death.” This astonishing act of humility took Jesus to the highest point of exaltation (vv. 9-11). God exalted Him, giving Him the name above all names. The “attitude of altitude” requires humility, recognising our limitations and dependence on God (v. 3).

It demands selflessness, considering others’ interests above our own (v. 4). Obedience to God’s will, regardless of the cost, is also essential (v. 8). As believers, we are called to reflect Christ’s attitude, embracing humility and selflessness (v. 5). This mind-set critically changes relationships, fostering unity and love within the body of Christ. By adopting the attitude of altitude, we reflect God’s character, demonstrate true greatness, and experience the transformative power of humility. In verses 10-11, Paul writes, “Every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” We ascend to this altitude by embracing first the transformative power of humility, and our lives proclaiming the majesty of Christ, who emptied Himself for our salvation.

STUDY:

Paul’s unchanging devotion to Christ shines through in his declaration, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Phil. 1:21). Life’s purpose is unbreakably linked to serving Christ, with death promising eternal union. Torn between continuing his ministry and being with Christ, Paul recognises the value of his work among the Philippians (vv. 22-26). In Philippians 1:27-30, he encourages the Philippians to live worthy of the gospel, standing firm in unity and faith, despite opposition. Suffering for Christ becomes a privilege, not punishment (v. 29). This passage reminds us that our lives should reflect Christ’s lordship, balancing earthly responsibilities with heavenly aspirations. Faithfulness in suffering demonstrates allegiance to Christ.

Paul’s words inspire us to re-evaluate priorities, embracing a life singularly focused on Christ. As we go through life’s challenges, may we find joy in serving others and courage in adversity, proclaiming: “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” May our struggles be transformed into gospel gold, reflecting God’s glory and radiant hope! Through Paul’s example, we discover life’s true purpose: Living for Christ, regardless of circumstances!

STUDY:

In this passage, Paul masterfully contrasts our earthly existence with our heavenly future. He describes our physical bodies as “earthy tents” (v. 1), fragile and temporary, while our heavenly dwelling is an “eternal house” (v. 1) crafted by God. Paul’s longing for heaven is intense as he groans, eager to exchange his mortal body for immortality (vv. 2-4). This desire isn’t driven by disregard for life but by the promise of eternal life. Our heavenly bodies will be “clothed” with incorruption, freeing us from mortality’s burdens (v. 4). The Holy Spirit serves as a “deposit” or guarantee of our heavenly inheritance (v. 5), securing our future. This assurance enables us to live by faith, not sight (v. 7).

Though our earthly tents may fail, our eternal homes await. Paul’s words offer comfort amidst suffering and uncertainty. Our struggles are temporary; our glory is eternal. As believers, we’re caught between two realities, the now and the not-yet. May this promise sustain us: God is building us an eternal mansion, where sorrow and pain will fade into eternal joy. In the face of life’s challenges, let us fix our gaze on the heavenly horizon, where our eternal home awaits. May the hope of heaven transform our lives, empowering us to live with purpose, perseverance, and passion!

Text: John 21:15-25

21:15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [a]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [b]love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.”

21:16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [c]Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [d]love You.”He said to him, “Tend My sheep.”

21:17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [e]Jonah, do you [f]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

21:18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.”

21:19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

21:20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”

21:21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

21:22 Jesus said to him, “If I [g]will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

21:23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

21:24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

21:25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

STUDY:

In today’s Bible passage, Jesus restores Peter to leadership after his triple denial. Their memorable conversation begins with Jesus’ triple affirmation: “Do you love me?” (vv. 15-17). Peter’s affirmations prompted Jesus’ commission: “Feed my sheep,” signifying Peter’s renewed role. Jesus foresaw Peter’s future martyrdom (vv. 18-19), redeeming his past failure. The call to “Follow me” (v. 19) emphasised discipleship’s essence: Surrendering plans to Jesus’ will. The discussion about John’s fate (vv. 20-23) highlights unique callings. Jesus’ response cautions against comparing paths. John’s eyewitness testimony (vv. 24-25) affirms Scripture’s reliability and personal experience’s significance.

Key themes emerge as follow—Redemption: Jesus forgave Peter. Humility: Peter’s commission required acknowledging Jesus’ sovereignty. Unique callings: Jesus highlighted distinct paths. This passage encourages believers struggling with past failures or uncertain callings. Jesus’ words resonate: “Follow me.” Surrendering to His will brings redemption, restored purpose, and deepened faith.
This conversation reminds us that our past does not define us; our future is shaped by Jesus’ love. By following Him, we experience forgiveness, renewed purpose, and transformed lives. Jesus’ restoration of Peter demonstrates His power to redeem and forgive, offering hope to all believers. His words echo through the ages: “Follow me.”

Text: Philippians 1:12-20

1:12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,

1:13 so that it has become evident to the whole <sup>[a]</sup>palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ;

1:14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill:

1:16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;

1:17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.

1:18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

1:19 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

1:20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

STUDY:

In today’s passage, Paul shares his perspective on suffering for the gospel. Despite imprisonment, Paul’s focus remained fixed on gospel advancement, rather than personal circumstances. Ironically, his chains inspired fellow believers to boldness (v. 14) and spread awareness of Christ within the palace guards (v. 13). Paul acknowledged that there are varied motives for preaching Christ, from selfish ambition to sincerity (vv. 15-17). Yet, he rejoiced in the proclamation itself (v. 18), demonstrating his single-minded devotion to the gospel. In verses 19-20, Paul expressed confidence in spiritual deliverance through the Philippians’ prayers and God’s provision. This passage highlights key themes as follow: Gospel-centeredness: Paul prioritized gospel advancement. Perseverance: Paul remained steadfast despite suffering. Sovereignty: God leverages adversity for His purposes. Unity: Paul celebrated gospel proclamation, regardless of motives.

Paul’s attitude challenges believers to reassess their perspective on suffering. He showed that even in adversity, God can bring about gospel progress and spiritual growth. Paul’s resilience inspires believers to focus on the gospel, trust God’s sovereignty, and unite in proclaiming Christ. This passage encourages believers to adopt a gospel-centered perspective, persevering through challenges and rejoicing in the advancement of God’s kingdom. By embracing this mind-set, believers can transform their struggles into opportunities for spiritual growth and gospel impact.

Dear Lord, grant me perseverance in adversity, steadfast faith, and boldness to proclaim Christ. Amen.
