Nigeria spent a total of $6.23m on foreign healthcare-related services from January to August 22, 2023, The PUNCH reports.

This is according to a report obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria on the amount spent on health-related and social services under the sectoral utilisation for transactions valid for foreign exchange.

According to the report, $0.17m was spent on foreign health-related services in January while $0.14m was spent in February.

The spending increased in March and April to $0.43m and $3.02m respectively.

The CBN report also showed that the country spent $0.79m in May and dropped to $0.42m in June.

The amount spent peaked in July at $0.46m and increased to $0.80m in August.

The PUNCH reports that the amount for the eight months this year is more that the amount spent ($1.47m) for the same period in 2021

Meanwhile, stakeholders have lamented poor access to forex for the importation and manufacturing of essential medicines.

The Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria, in a communiqué issued in September, had said some of the challenges faced by pharmaceutical industries include lack of infrastructure, inconsistent and mismanaged government policies, supply chain challenges, weak industrial linkages, weak technology, and engineering base, poor access to forex, lack of petrochemical industries to enable Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients production as well as inadequate incentives.

“NAIP, therefore, calls on the Nigerian government to resolve the lingering crisis in securing forex for the importation and manufacturing of essential medicines as this is becoming one of the greatest threats to the growth of the Pharma Industry in Nigeria,” it said.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, however, admitted that there is a shortage of foreign exchange to meet the import needs of Nigerians and challenged financial institutions to proffer solutions to the problem.

Speaking at the 2022 Bankers’ Committee retreat in Lagos, Emefiele said collaborative programmes and initiatives of the Bankers’ Committee have delivered tangible contributions to the nation’s economic prosperity.

He said “Recognising the hindrances of high inflation and foreign exchange shortages on the achievement of our national development goals, the 2022 Retreat is convened to focus on the development of the local manufacturing industry and non-oil sectors, more broadly, and particularly to enhance the sector’s capacity to generate foreign exchange inflows.

“The focus is, even more, germane considering the enormity of the global economic turbulence, as wave after wave of negative shocks continue to ravage many countries.”

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, said Nigeria was already experiencing the negative fallout of climate change seen in the flooding, desert encroachment, and drought experienced in various parts of the country.

According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said this at an audience he granted the former United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on the sidelines of the First World Bio Summit 2022 in Seoul, South Korea.

The statement is titled ‘Nigeria facing climate change challenges, President Buhari declares during meeting with Ban Ki-Moon in Seoul.’

During the conversation, Buhari expressed delight with the existing cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea, especially in energy supply, citing gas exports to the Asian country.

He also described education as a critical investment in addressing unemployment and underdevelopment, calling for a closer focus on health challenges.

On his part, the former UN Chief who advocates Climate Change remediation and chairs the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for Better Future sympathised with the President over the flooding.

Ki-moon called for more investment to improve education and avert environmental degradation and preventive diseases to meet the core Sustainable Development Goals.

He thanked Buhari for attending the World Bio Summit, adding that his presence would highlight the importance of global action and cooperation in developing vaccines and technology to meet the huge threat and challenges of pandemics.

Ki-moon also noted that Nigeria is “a very important country,” having prominent citizens occupying sensitive positions in global organisations.

Therefore, he called for more people-to-people engagements and cultural cooperation between both countries even as he sought Nigeria’s support in Korea’s bid to host an EXPO in 2030.

Explaining his pet project, the ex-UN Scribe said his Global Centre on Adaptation is trying to mobilize resources to help developing countries fight climate change.

He urged donor countries to fulfil their financial commitments to the Global Climate Fund.

Buhari and his guest also discussed the role of gender equality in attaining a prosperous society while calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.

AVO TV, the recently launched free streaming app, is poised to disrupt the dominance of pay TV as the main source of premium live TV and video-on-demand for Nigerians. The free app will offer a bouquet of over 100 local and international channels, plus over 2,000 Nollywood movies available on-demand.

AVO brings together the best of local TV channels, such as AIT, Silverbird, TVC, ACNNTV, WAP and OnMax, alongside premium international channels, including Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, SportsGrid, IndieFlix, Unreel and Gusto TV, plus all the latest Nollywood blockbusters.

AVO’s entire range of TV channels and on-demand content is available to watch without subscription. Download the app now on Android mobile, iOS, Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Roku, or stream via the AVO TV web player.

Awaes Jaswal, CEO, said: “We are delighted to announce AVO TV’s presence in Nigeria as our first major market in Africa. Our aim for AVO TV is to make premium content available to everyone, not just those who can afford expensive pay TV subscriptions. As data and internet costs reduce over the coming years, we hope that AVO TV will be the main source of TV for all Nigerians”.

Despite launching only in June this year, AVO TV has amassed over 200,000 downloads, and viewers have already streamed over 10 million minutes of content via the app. Downloads and watch times continue to grow rapidly, regularly putting AVO TV at the top of the Google Play Store charts in Nigeria.

Speaking further, Mr Jaswal noted that the company plans continuous improvement of its TV and VOD offerings. “We are delighted with the progress made towards our content strategy and have some fantastic content partners already on-board. However, we are determined to give our users a constantly improving product and have a number of new and exciting content deals to announce over the coming weeks. Our aim is to add new content on a regular basis”.

The company also aims to make frequent upgrades to the app in order to improve the overall viewing experience: a Data Saver mode was recently added to the Android mobile version, enabling viewers to adjust their streaming preferences and optimize data usage.

The app will be monetized through advertising only, a business model which has gained huge traction in the US and Europe and disrupted the dominant pay TV operators in those regions.
