The All Africa Conference of Churches Youth Pre-Assembly has called for increased investment in youth development to address unemployment, political and economic instability on the continent.

Chairperson of the youth pre-assembly steering committee, Afika Rwayi, made the call at the opening of the conference at St. Matthias House, Gudu in Abuja on Friday.

Ms Rwayi said that according to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the youth unemployment rate in Africa is approximately 19.8 per cent in 2021.

She said that the figure was significantly higher than the global average, saying that the expanding youth population added to the urgent need for policies and initiatives that foster job creation.

According to her, compounding the problem is the limited access to quality education, which further impedes the acquisition of essential skills required for a competitive job market.

She said that African youths are faced with a series of socio-economic challenges that significantly impact their lives and opportunities.

Rwayi said that the high rates of unemployment in Africa represented a formidable challenge for the continent’s youths, as they encountered difficulties in accessing stable and meaningful employment opportunities.

She said that insufficient educational resources, outdated curricula, and a lack of vocational training programs contribute to a scenario where many young people enter the workforce without the necessary qualifications.

She stated, “This not only perpetuates the cycle of unemployment but also exacerbates the overall socio-economic disparities within the youth demographic.

“To break this cycle, there is an imperative need to invest in education systems that are responsive to the evolving demands of the job market, providing young Africans with the tools and knowledge they need to contribute meaningfully to their societies and economies.

“Additionally, promoting vocational training and entrepreneurship programs can empower youth to create their own opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency in the face of employment challenges.

“The significant digital divide in Africa underscores a critical challenge for its youth, as a substantial portion of this demographic lacks access to technology and the internet.

“This digital disparity inhibits their full participation in the global digital economy, limiting opportunities for economic advancement and connectivity.

“Unequal distribution of technological infrastructure, coupled with socio-economic disparities, creates barriers for many young Africans to acquire the digital skills necessary for the modern workforce.”

Rwayi said that according to a report by the World Health Organisation, it is estimated that about 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.

She said that in Africa, these numbers are often higher due to various cultural, social, and economic factors as the African Union reports that in some regions, up to 50 per cent of women have experienced gender-based violence.

Rwayi stressed the need to address the challenges saying that as much the continent is faced with these challenges, they do not define Africans and the continent.

She said that the issues affecting Africa ranging from political and economic instabilities, civil unrest, lack of basic infrastructure among others are further exacerbated by corruption which hinders investments.

Rwayi said that efforts must be made to ensure funds allocated to essential services, infrastructure projects, and social welfare programmes do not end up in the hands of corrupt officials, widening socio-economic disparities.

Addressing the assembly, the Archbishop Michael Akinwale of the Methodist Cathedral Church of Unity, appealed to African youths to come together and come up with solutions to the challenges facing the continent.

Mr Akinwale admonished youths not to allow the present global economic situation to reduce the potential deposited in them by God.

He reminded them that African leaders were looking up to them for a brighter future of the continent.

The archbishop, however, called on African leaders to initiate programmes and policies as well as ensure youths inclusiveness in governance for a new dawn in Africa.

Executive Secretary of the assembly, Muyunga Brian, said there are no fewer than 600 youths from across 40 African countries at the assembly.

Mr Brian said that the meeting provides another opportunity for African youths to contribute to the sustainable development of the continent.

He said that the outcome of the five-day conference would empower young Africans to champion a united and prosperous continent.

The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches which confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Saviour according to the scriptures, and therefore seek to fulfil together their common calling to the glory of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is a community of churches on the way to visible unity in one faith and one eucharistic fellowship, expressed in worship and in common life in Christ. It seeks to advance towards this unity, as Jesus prayed for his followers, “so that the world may believe.” (John 17:21).

In a press conference on 14 November in Abuja, Nigeria, the World Council of Churches (WCC) leadership of the central committee highlighted the WCC’s focus on some of the world’s most serious challenges, and how the WCC brings hope. It also released a statement on COP28’s responsibility for climate justice and demands an immediate ceasefire, and the opening of humanitarian corridors in Palestine and Israel.

WCC highlights how to bring hope amid world’s concerns

The World Council of Churches (WCC) leadership of the central committee highlighted the WCC’s focus on some of the world’s most serious challenges, and how the WCC brings hope.

Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, moderator of the WCC central committee, reflected on how appreciative the WCC executive committee has been for the host churches in Nigeria as the governing body met in Abuja from 8-14 November.

“We have been impressed by the religious vibrance of this country, not only by the beauty of the countryside, by the beauty of the people, but by the strong religious basis of Nigeria,” said Bedford-Strohm, highlighting an executive committee statement on Nigeria and its regional context. “I want to assure you of our prayers.”

Rev. Merlyn Hyde Riley, vice-moderator of the WCC central committee, spoke of the WCC executive committee’s statement on the COP28. “The WCC is interested and is concerned about all justice issues, and climate justice is one of those issues. We are calling for greater attention to renewable energy, that we will now find alternative ways for sourcing and finding energy for our populations, that we will give great attention to global warming. It is important that, as we call for more renewable energy, that we are also calling for greater climate financing,” she said.

H.E. Archbishop Dr Vicken Aykazian, vice-moderator of the WCC central committee, expressed deep appreciation for the WCC’s statement on the need for international response to the needs of Nagorno-Karabakh refugees.

“Why the World Council of Churches?” he asked. “Because the World Council of Churches is an important organization in the world that tries to find a solution for those people who are suffering. We thank God for this organization and we thank the leadership of the World Council of Churches for following, and continuing to follow, what is happening in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, WCC general secretary, in addition to offering an introductory overview of the WCC, spoke about the executive committee’s statement on Palestine and Israel.

“We work on a very broad scale of interreligious cooperation and collaboration in the field of peace efforts,” he said. “Since the attack of Hamas on Israel on 7 October, there has been continued retaliation by Israel, and so the situation in the Gaza is really, really bad. We have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Our view as the WCC is that violence and wars do not contribute to peaceful negotiations.”

The press conference was offered a panel discussion followed by a question-and-answer session. In introducing the panel, His Holiness Rev. Dr Rufus Okikiola Ositelu, Church of the Lord (Prayer Fellowship) Worldwide, WCC president from Africa, gave a heartfelt message of gratitude to the WCC member churches and communities in Nigeria. “For this we say, thank you, and God bless you all,” he said.

The governing body released a statement after reviewing the report of a WCC delegation visit to Armenia on 18-22 September.

The statement “expresses deep solidarity with the Armenian people and churches, and especially with all those who have fled from their ancient homeland in Nagorno-Karabakh, following the traumatic events of 19-20 September 2023.”

The WCC also expresses profound regret that, “in the years since the 1992-1994 Nagorno-Karabakh war, ways could not be found to secure a sustainable peace among the people of the region.”

The statement urges the government of Azerbaijan to guarantee security and equal rights for those ethnic Armenian people who remain or who may decide to return to their homes. Among other calls, the statement also appeals to the European Union “to strengthen the EU Mission in Armenia, in order to ensure sufficient personnel and resources to monitor and report on any incursions by Azerbaijan’s armed forces on the sovereign territory of Armenia.”

The WCC brings together churches, denominations and church fellowships in more than 120 countries and territories throughout the world, representing over 580 million Christians and including most of the world’s Orthodox churches, scores of Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed churches, as well as many United and Independent churches. While the bulk of the WCC’s founding churches were European and North American, today most member churches are in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific. There are now 352 member churches.

The All Africa Conference of Churches will be gathering in Nigeria for its 12th General Assembly and 60th Anniversary in the month of November, 2023 at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.

The 12th General Assembly will seek to strengthen the mission and vision of the AACC. The Assembly which will be a moment for churches in the continent to celebrate their journey and achievements in the past 60 years will also take stock of their work and chart the way forward to work more closely and coordinated as a united body of Christ.

The AACC was birthed in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1959, through a meeting summoned by Late Ezeogo Dr. Akanu Ibiam, to harmonize the activities of Christians in Africa towards the development of the Continent. The AACC was formally inaugurated in Kampala, Kenya in 1963, and will be marking its 60th anniversary at this assembly which holds once every five years.

Nigeria is very significant as it is the home of the historic Ibadan Conference, which conceived this continental body. The Ibadan conference featured 200 delegates from 25 countries, eager to discuss the possibility of sustained ecumenical action in Africa. The Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) hosted the Conference under the leadership of Sir Francis Akanu Ibiam, a Presbyterian educationist, physician, and ecumenist and then President of CCN. The most important commitment from Ibadan was the formation of a provisional committee whose job was to lay the foundation of the AACC to be the prime ecumenical thinking agent and common voice of the churches in Africa. The conference happened at a time when the continent was grappling with challenges of liberation, independence and decolonization.

Since its formation in 1963, the AACC has gathered 204 member churches and Christian Councils in 43 African countries into a dynamic fellowship. Through its vision “Churches in Africa together for Life, Peace, Justice and Dignity”, the vocation of the organization is to foster and sustain fellowship and unity among the Churches in Africa for common witness and service to help people of Africa. Alot has been achieved through its assemblies, conferences, workshops, publications, and seminars held regionally and continentally.

Some of these activities engage themes and challenges linked with peace and security, population and development, economic justice, climate justice and other emerging issues confronting the continent that require the church to make visible its contributions toward addressing the issues and challenges.

The local organizing Committee for this anniversary and 12th Assembly is headed by His Eminence, Rev. Dr. Israel Akanji FAR; president of the Nigerian Baptist Convention who have been visiting member churches of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) and of AACC to create awareness in hosting the entire African Churches. The Church being visited in Abuja include The Nigeria Baptist Convention, The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, The Methodist Church of Nigeria, The Presbyterian Church and so on within and around the Federal Capital Territory.

AACC PAST ASSEMBLIES

The AACC was inaugurated in April 20, 1963 in Kampala, Uganda. Since its inception, this continental body has witnessed 11 General Assemblies. “The establishment of AACC marks the end of the missionary era with its mission Churches and the beginning of an era where the new autonomous Churches in Africa will triumphantly declare their acceptance of the responsibility of charting the way forward.” Quote by Dr. Mtimkulu, during the AACC General Assembly, in Kampala, Uganda in 1963 under the theme “Freedom and Unity in Christ”. This Assembly captured the imagination and aspirations of the people because it served as a unifying and mobilizing magnet for the churches.
