The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is defending its new Artificial Intelligence-powered registration system, the Intelligent Companies Registration Portal (ICRP), despite numerous complaints from users.

The CAC stated that the ICRP is efficiently processing over 11,000 company registrations and compliance tasks daily, and recently handled 8,000 name reservation requests in a single day—a process that used to take at least two weeks.

Acknowledging initial “teething challenges” and user complaints, especially from legal professionals and business owners, regarding system glitches and delays, the commission refuted claims of poor service or that the portal hinders business operations in Nigeria.

The CAC explained that the ICRP incorporates additional security measures, such as mandatory One Time Passcode (OTP) generation for each transaction, to comply with the Data Protection Act 2023 and prevent unauthorized access.

The commission emphasized that the ICRP is a cost-effective solution, with customers paying only after a name is secured. It also noted a significant improvement in service delivery, including processing over 3,000 emails daily. While admitting to some expected transitional issues, the CAC assured users that their feedback is being incorporated and that the portal will soon achieve optimal performance.

Addressing registration delays caused by data verification issues, the CAC clarified that problems with the National Identity Management Commission led them to implement alternative technology for user detail verification and to ensure real-time payments through more gateway options. The ICRP integrates with partners like Remita for stamp duty and service payments.

The CAC reaffirmed its commitment to reform, calling the AI portal a “customer-centric innovation” aimed at aligning with global best practices and improving Nigeria’s ease of doing business rankings.

Telecom consumers in Nigeria will now receive advance warnings and updates on major service disruptions, following a new directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

According to the NCC, all telecom operators must notify affected users through media platforms, disclosing the cause of the outage, affected areas, and estimated restoration timelines. Where disruptions last beyond 24 hours, operators are required to offer proportional compensation, such as service validity extensions, in line with the Consumer Code of Practice Regulations.

Nnenna Ukoha, Acting Head of Public Affairs at the NCC, made this known in a statement, while the Commission’s Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Edoyemi Ogor, emphasized that the directive follows months of piloting a new reporting system with telecom providers.

“This move is part of our broader effort to ensure transparency, accountability, and improved service quality across the telecom sector,” Ogor said. He added that operators must also provide at least one week’s notice for planned outages.

The directive supports the implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order, which designates telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), underscoring its role in national security and economic stability.

The NCC defines major outages based on three criteria:

Network issues (e.g., fibre cuts, theft, vandalism) affecting 5% of subscribers or five or more Local Government Areas (LGAs);

Isolation of 100+ sites or 5% of total sites for over 30 minutes;

Severe network degradation in any of the top 10 traffic-heavy states.

Operators are also required to report such disruptions via the NCC’s publicly accessible Major Outage Reporting Portal, which provides transparency on the causes and scale of each incident.

Tesla is gearing up to launch its self-driving car service in Austin, Texas, as early as June 2025, reported by CEO Elon Musk. During Tesla’s fourth-quarter earnings call, Musk confirmed that the company remains on track to deploy its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, marking a major milestone in autonomous vehicle development.

“We’re confident in launching unsupervised, full self-driving in Austin this June,” Musk stated. “We already have Teslas operating autonomously at our Fremont factory, and we’ll soon expand that to our Texas facility.”

Tesla’s Self-Driving Rollout Strategy

Tesla had previously set a goal of launching its self-driving service in California and Texas by 2025. Now, with Austin selected as the test market, the company is moving closer to making that vision a reality.

Reports of Tesla working with Austin regulators surfaced in December when emails obtained by Bloomberg revealed the company’s discussions with city officials. At the time, Tesla had not finalized Austin as the launch city, as it was still securing regulatory approval.

While Tesla originally planned to introduce the service with its upcoming Cybercab, the company will instead deploy its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles until the Cybercab’s expected debut in 2027.

“Looking ahead, 2025 is shaping up to be a defining year for Tesla,” Musk said. “It may very well be the most significant year in our history.”

A Cautious Yet Ambitious Approach

Musk emphasized that Tesla will take a measured approach to rolling out its self-driving service.

“We’re starting small, making sure everything runs smoothly, and then scaling up—always with safety as our top priority,” he explained.

Tesla’s focus on safety comes amid challenges faced by self-driving taxi services. While autonomous vehicles statistically outperform human drivers in safety, high-profile incidents continue to raise concerns.

For instance, in 2023, California regulators suspended Cruise’s driverless car operations due to safety issues. More recently, in early 2024, two Waymo autonomous vehicles collided with the same towed pickup truck twice in one day.

How Tesla’s AI-Driven Self-Driving Works

Unlike many autonomous systems that rely on high-precision maps, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving AI analyzes and adapts to roads in real time. This approach enables Tesla vehicles to drive anywhere without requiring pre-mapped routes.

Austin will serve as the proving ground for this technology before expanding to other regions. If all goes as planned, Tesla expects a broader rollout soon after the Austin launch.

With self-driving technology advancing rapidly, Tesla’s June 2025 launch in Austin could mark a turning point for the future of autonomous vehicles in the U.S.

Telecommunications companies (telcos) will soon begin fully introducing new tariffs, according to the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).

This follows the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) granting approval for a 50 percent tariff hike on January 20. Just days later, Finance Minister Wale Edun stated that tariffs in the telecommunications sector would undergo periodic reviews.

During a forum with telecom executives, ALTON Chairman Gbenga Adebayo explained that telcos are currently filing, reviewing, and obtaining regulatory approvals for their new rates. He emphasized that once approvals are granted, different operators will begin rolling out the new tariffs.

“We are now following the required regulatory steps: filing, review, and obtaining approval,” Adebayo said. “Once the approvals are in place, price improvements will start. Over the next month, we anticipate a full introduction of the new rates. It’s crucial that we take the necessary steps for the sector’s survival.”

Adebayo also pointed out that the tariff adjustments are essential for the telecommunications sector’s survival, urging the government not to expect the industry to subsidize other sectors.

“We cannot continue to subsidize other sectors,” he stated. “Just because the cost of garri, pepper, and okro has risen, doesn’t mean we should sell services below cost. If we keep doing this, it will lead to negative consequences. Sustainable rates are needed, and the government must not outsource its problems to telecom operators.”

Adebayo emphasized that the government should offer proper support through palliative measures, rather than relying on the telecommunications industry for subsidization.

USSD Debt Resolution Progress

In regards to the N250 billion unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) debt with banks, Adebayo confirmed that progress is being made toward a resolution. He thanked all stakeholders for their efforts and noted that the issue is nearing a conclusion.

“The situation is improving, and we can now see light at the end of the tunnel,” Adebayo said. “Tensions in the sector have lessened, and concerns have decreased as we move toward a final resolution.”

On January 15, the NCC directed telcos to disconnect the USSD codes of nine banks if they failed to pay their outstanding debts.

T-Mobile and Elon Musk’s SpaceX have been conducting trial runs of the Starlink cellular network since receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November last year.

The ongoing trial currently supports “text via satellite,” with plans to introduce voice and data capabilities in the future, as per T-Mobile’s website. Initially, only select Android smartphones were eligible for testing, but iPhones with the latest iOS 18.3 update have now been added.

Bloomberg News first reported on Tuesday that Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile had been discreetly working to integrate support for the network in the latest iPhone software.

Apple and SpaceX did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment outside regular business hours.

In October last year, the FCC granted permission for SpaceX and T-Mobile to activate Starlink’s direct-to-cell capability, allowing satellite coverage for mobile devices in areas of North Carolina severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Telecommunication companies in Nigeria, led by MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola, are advocating for a 100% tariff increase to address escalating operational costs, inflation, and naira devaluation.

Toriola highlighted that these economic pressures have made the adjustment critical for the survival of the telecom industry.

Toriola acknowledged the government’s sensitivity to the financial strain on consumers but remained hopeful for a substantial tariff adjustment. “While we at MTN believe a 100% increase is necessary, we recognize the government’s caution in imposing additional burdens on consumers. Still, I am optimistic that a meaningful adjustment will be approved, possibly through gradual increments over the year,” he stated.

Toriola noted that other industries, including aviation and power, have already raised tariffs, leaving telecoms as one of the few sectors yet to align with current economic realities. He also pointed out that Nigeria continues to rank among the lowest globally in data and voice tariffs, based on international telecom statistics.

According to Toriola, a tariff increase would secure the industry’s sustainability by enabling continued investment in infrastructure, network capacity, and power systems. “These adjustments will not only ensure sustainability but also allow us to improve service quality and meet the expectations of Nigerian consumers,” he explained.

Describing 2024 as a particularly difficult year for the telecom sector, Toriola attributed the challenges to inflation and currency devaluation. However, he commended policymakers for steps taken to support the sector’s long-term viability.

A Nigerian United States-based expert in Automotive Cybersecurity, Engr. Sunday Aluko has raised the alarm on a growing global threat: hackers stealing cars using just a phone camera.

Aluko, leveraging his expertise in the automotive industry, emphasized the urgent need for car manufacturers and owners to adopt robust cybersecurity measures to combat this evolving crime.

With modern vehicles relying heavily on electronic systems, car thieves now exploit vulnerabilities that require no physical tampering.

By simply capturing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) displayed on a car’s windshield, they can duplicate keys with an automated VIN to key tools, bypass security systems, and steal vehicles within seconds

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code stamped on every vehicle, providing essential information such as make, model, and manufacturing history. While the VIN is critical for legitimate purposes like recalls and repairs, it has become a tool for criminals in the digital age.

Speaking with our correspondent, Aluko explained how snapping a photo of the VIN allows hackers to automate key cutting, clone electronic key fobs, and exploit a vehicle’s electronic systems. This method requires no broken windows, no tampered wires, and no physical struggle.

He noted that today’s car thieves operate discreetly, even in crowded spaces, leveraging technology to execute thefts swiftly.

“This is a global threat. All a hacker needs is your VIN to bypass security systems and drive away with your car in seconds,” Aluko said.

As vehicle technology advances globally, so do the tactics of cybercriminals.

In 2023, reports from cybersecurity agencies in Europe and North America revealed a sharp rise in VIN-based car thefts. Countries like Germany and Japan are already addressing these vulnerabilities through stricter regulations and enhanced cybersecurity protocols. However, the global automotive industry faces a significant challenge in staying ahead of these threats.

To mitigate the risk of VIN-based car theft, Aluko highlighted the importance of concealing the VIN displayed on dashboards, particularly in public spaces. He also recommended additional security measures such as steering wheel locks, storing wireless key fobs in protective pouches, and ensuring vehicle software is regularly updated to patch vulnerabilities.

He emphasized the need for automakers to enhance encryption protocols and implement robust cybersecurity frameworks in vehicle design.

He also called on policymakers to introduce regulations that mandate stronger security features in cars.

“All it takes is a photo of your license plate or VIN for a hacker to compromise your car’s security,” Aluko warned. “Automakers and owners must work together to safeguard vehicles. Awareness and proactive measures are key.”

As an advocate for a safer automotive future, Aluko urged stakeholders to prioritize cybersecurity. “The rise in VIN-based car theft highlights the urgency for global action. It’s not just about protecting assets; it’s about securing the future of transportation.”

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of vigilance among car owners. “While technology has made our lives easier, it has also introduced new risks. Protecting your vehicle begins with awareness and taking simple preventive steps.

NITDA shared this information in a statement titled “NITDA Commends Tech Giants for Adhering to Code of Practice,” posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. The agency attributed the increase in tax revenue to compliance efforts by interactive computer service platforms and internet intermediaries operating in Nigeria, supported by data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The statement, signed by Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Head of Public Affairs, highlighted, “This significant revenue growth underscores the effectiveness of regulatory frameworks in ensuring compliance and fostering development in the digital economy.”

Additionally, NITDA revealed that in 2023, social media platforms deactivated 12.1 million accounts belonging to Nigerians for various offenses and removed 65.8 million pieces of content that violated platform policies.

While applauding the platforms’ adherence to regulations, NITDA stressed the need for continuous collaboration and innovation to address evolving challenges and create a safer digital space.

Insights from the agency’s 2023 compliance report showcase efforts by these platforms to prioritize user safety and align with the Code of Practice and community standards.

In a groundbreaking move, the Diocese of Nnewi Anglican Communion has inaugurated the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics Hub in Nnewi, Anambra State. This initiative stands as a pioneering effort by a church in Nigeria and possibly across Africa.

During the commissioning ceremony held on Saturday at the Bishop Uzodike Memorial Seminary, Rt. Revd Ndubuisi Obi, Bishop of the Diocese, described the establishment of the Hub as a significant leap into the future. He recalled that around three years ago, the Church embarked on a venture that was initially seen as ambitious and unconventional.

The Bishop revealed that the Church began integrating Robotics coding and AI into their secondary school curriculum. “We transitioned from Sunday sermons to coding classes and from prayer meetings to AI workshops. Our students embraced these changes wholeheartedly,” he said.

He continued, “Our students didn’t just want to learn; they aspired to delve deeper, explore further, and become creators and innovators in the technological sphere. As their Bishop, I felt compelled to support their enthusiasm and sustain their curiosity.”

Reflecting on the project’s inception, the Bishop noted, “I wondered how we could best engage our students and community in this rapidly evolving technological world. Thus, the idea of the AI and Robotics Hub emerged. We knew it was a monumental task, but as they say, great things don’t come from comfort zones.”

He expressed confidence in EDUFUN Technik, led by Uchenna Onwuamegbu-Ugwu, a Harvard graduate, as the ideal partner to manage the lab. “With your expertise and our vision, we’re making history together,” the Bishop stated.

The Bishop emphasized that the Hub represents the beginning of innovation, with hopes that it will inspire students to pursue careers in AI, Robotics, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and IoT. “Our goal is to equip them to become AI engineers, Robotics specialists, software developers, or tech entrepreneurs.”

In response, Onwuamegbu-Ugwu expressed her excitement about being part of this transformative project. She shared that her journey to bring technology and robotics into education began a decade ago. “After years of advocating and meeting with various leaders, it was in 2021 that I met Bishop Obi. His vision and commitment made this dream a reality,” she said.

She praised Bishop Obi’s dedication, noting, “His leadership and foresight ensure that his students are not just keeping up but leading in technological innovation. Today’s opening of the Hub is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his students’ future.”
