The Trade Union Congress has backed out of the planned two-day nationwide protest declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress over the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and hardship in the country. The Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, told coresspondents  on Wednesday that the decision to protest on February 27 and 28 as announced by the NLC was not taken collectively by both unions. The Labour Party deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State, Islamiyat Oyefusi, on Wednesday, resigned her membership of the party. Oyefusi contested alongside Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour in the 2023 governorship election won by incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Oyefusi made her resignation known in a letter dated February 22, 2024 and addressed to the chairman of the party in Isele 1 ward, Ikorodu area of the state. The national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, who was arrested on Wednesday in Benin, Edo State capital by operatives of Zone 5 Police headquarters, has been released on bail. It was gathered that his arrest was a result of a petition forwarded to the zone from the office of the Inspector General of Police in Abuja. Labour Party, LP, National Chairman, Julius Abure, has, reportedly, been arrested by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force in Edo State. According to Vanguard, the LP chairman’s arrest followed a petition by the party’s Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia. The youth leader petitioned the Edo State Commissioner of Police alleging that he was attacked by some party members in December 2023. An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, the state capital has sentenced six persons to death over their involvement in bank robberies which took place in Akure and Idanre in 2011. The convicts include a pastor, Adewale Adelu, and five others – Ikechuckwu Maduagwu, Fayemi Olubusuyi, Ropo Adeleye, Dele Otopka, and Bayo Omotosho. They were found guilty of robbing two commercial banks in Akure and Idanre on November 19 and December 8, 2011 in Akure and Idanre respectively.
