Topic: JESUS BEGINS HIS MINISTRY
Text:Luke 4:14-22
4:14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.
4:15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
4:16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
4:17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me,To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are Oppressed;
4:19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
4:20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
4:21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
4:22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
STUDY:
After His victory over Satan’s temptations in the wilderness, Jesus returned in the power of the Holy Spirit to Galilee where He became very famous. On a Sabbath day, He went into the Synagogue in Nazareth where He read Isaiah 61:1-2a after which He sat down. As the people in the synagogue gazed at Him, He told them that the Scripture had been fulfilled in their hearing on that day. All the people testified and marvelled at the gracious words which He spoke and they wondered if He was not Joseph’s son.
Jesus Christ was filled with the Holy Spirit who led Him into the wilderness to be tempted. After the temptations, He returned in the power of the Holy Spirit. No wonder people glorified God when He taught in their synagogues and when He read the Scripture. He had the custom of going to the synagogue and participating in the worship. Do you have a good relationship with the Holy Spirit such that He leads you in all aspects of your life? Do you attend church services and activities regularly and actively participate in them? Determine to be a real follower of Jesus this year in your thoughts, speech, and actions, and you will be blessed.
Prayer:
Help me, O Lord, to be led by your Holy Spirit. Amen.
