Topic: THE THIRD TEMPTATION OF JESUS

Text:Luke 4:9-13

4:9   Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.

4:10 For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’

4:11  and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

4:12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

4:13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

STUDY:

After the devil had suffered two defeats from Jesus, one would think that the devil should give up. But this was not the case. He took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem. Here, he wanted to show Jesus that he too could quote from the Scriptures. He requested Jesus to throw Himself down from that high point if He was the Son of God. In fact, he urged Him to do this by quoting Psalm 91:11-12 which says, “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Jesus promptly replied the devil that “It has been said, you shall not tempt the Lord your God”(Deut.6:16). The devil had had enough and left in shame.

From our text, Jesus teaches us that no matter how long temptation lasts or how many times it occurs, believers need to stand firm on the Word of God, and resist. Jesus won decisively over the devil. May you also win your battles against the devil, and may you rely on the word of God in your heart whenever temptations come! As you resist the devil in your heart, he must flee after a while(1 Pet. 5:8-9a).

Prayer

Dear Father, help me to win by your word in Jesus’Name. Amen.
